I was at the station when I overheard Charlie talking to Bella. She was leaving today, and I wanted to talk to her before she could go. I headed to the Chief´s house and thankfully, her car was still there. When I knocked on the door, Bella answered and I was rendered speechless. She was still so beautiful but clearly, she didn’t feel the same way about me as she used to.

She slammed the door in my face, several times. I didn’t blame her. I begged for her forgiveness, and she gave it to me, but I knew she didn’t mean it. She was never going to forgive me.

I walked back to my cruiser, to drive home, reflecting on the first time I saw Bella Swan.

I knew I had to meet her, when I saw her in the parking lot of Forks High School.

But she was so shy and reserved; it was difficult to approach her. My opportunity came when I heard a crash in the hallway one Thursday morning. I turned around to see her, on the floor, all her books scattered around her. I helped her up and we walked to her next class together. From that day, we became best friends. Three months before graduation, I worked up the courage to ask her to date me and she agreed.

Everything was great and we were very happy together. But then, at senior prom, Leah Clearwater and I became king and queen. I practically abandoned Bella at our table, I was so preoccupied chatting with my friends, showing off my king status, and letting Leah hang all over me. After a while, she asked me to escort her to the parking lot because her sister was going to pick her up there. She said she was afraid to be alone, outside. I went with her, and we were there for twenty minutes before Bella came out of the gym. I could tell she was annoyed as she asked me to take her home and I reluctantly agreed. I left Bella on her porch and drove straight home.

That night, I thought a lot about my relationship with Bella. I knew I loved her, but I also knew I was attracted to Leah. She was incredibly sexy and a part of me wanted to be with her. I just didn’t want to cheat on Bella. She didn’t deserve that. The next day it was nice, the sun was out, so I went to La Push to swim.  When I got to the beach I noticed Leah was already in the water. She must have noticed me as she started heading in my direction. We began talking and before I knew it, I had invited her to join me for lunch. It wasn’t until I got back to my car, and checked my phone, I realize I had several missed calls from Bella. With a sigh, I turned my phone off and spent the rest of the day on the reservation with Leah.

When I arrived home, my mother told me Bella had called and I felt bad for ignoring her all day. For the next two days I thought only of my relationship with Bella and my growing attraction to Leah. In my defense, I was a stupid teenage boy, and my hormones were running wild. I was still a virgin, Bella and I having only made it to second base, and I wanted more. I knew from locker room talk that Leah was much more experienced so I decided to go for the easier route.

When I got to Bella’s house I had my speech well-rehearsed. I didn’t want to break her heart, I wanted a civilized break and who knew, maybe in a few years we could reconnect.

Everything went badly with Bella. She didn’t believe a word I said, but she wasn’t that upset either, so the next day I started to see Leah. When Bella confronted me on the beach, a week later, I was already so addicted to Leah’s body; I didn’t care about Bella’s feelings. I was mean and cruel to her.

By the time I left for college my mother was so mad at me. The first time she saw Leah, her eyes were popping out of her head. At the time, I didn’t care. But now I see what my mother was seeing; Leah was trashy and had no manners whatsoever. I didn’t care because the sex was good and I was a stupid teenage boy. I was an idiot. I lost my true love for no good reason.

Now things were looking even worse for me. Bella had seen me trying to fight off Leah’s advances, when I stopped to help her with her car, and has assumed we were still together. When she threw that in my face I was so angry at Leah, I was speechless. I wanted to argue, but I couldn’t find my words.

When I finally made it home I headed straight to bed. I just wanted to forget this day.

Monday was my day off. I was sleeping deeply, face down in my bed, when my cellphone started to ring. I groaned and rolled over to look at my alarm clock.

“What? Who is calling me at seven in the morning on my day off?” I asked no one, reaching for my cellphone to answer the call.

“Edward, I need you at the station in an hour. We have an urgent situation on our hands.” It was Charlie and he sounded frantic.

“Charlie? Why, what’s happening? You know it’s my day off, right?” I asked, yawning.

“I know, Edward, but I need all the deputies at the station. Like I said, we have an urgent situation and I really need you there.” He sounded desperate.

“Okay, Charlie, I’m on my way."
