«Morning Lazuli, It's Jasper. Did you sleep well?» -Unknown Number 7:15am
I had just stepped out of the shower and was drying myself off. My phone lit up with the notification as my text-tone sounded. I picked up my phone and read the text. I added the number as a contact and changed the contact name to 'Jasper' before texting back.
«Good morning to you too. And yeah I did. What's up?» -Sent 7:16am
I finished drying off and began to get dressed when my phone went off again
«Not much. You still gonna help me with that homework?» -Jasper 7:19am
I pulled up my stylishly ripped denim shorts and buttoned them before I responded
«Yeah. Don't know how much time we'll have tho. My bus gets there like 5 minutes before class.» -Sent 7:20am
Instant reply
«What's your address? I could pick you up?» -Jasper 7:20am
I blushed lightly again. Why do I keep doing that? Was I getting sick? I shrugged it off as I managed to clasp my bra behind my back. I pulled on my dark grey tank top with the white broken heart image and the Latin phrase 'Sed spiritus contribulatus' on it which roughly translates to 'But a broken spirit' before I sent my address.
« I didn't know you had a car. Sweet. ### Coral ave. What time?» -Sent 7:21am
I made my way into the kitchen and poured myself a bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch. My text-tone chimed again
«About half an hour? 10 to 8?» Jasper 7:23am
«Sounds good to me. See you then.» -Sent 7:23am
I responded quickly before beginning to eat. Once my bowl was empty of cereal, I drank the milk. Yeah that's right, I'm no milk waster. And then I stepped back into the bathroom and brushed my teeth. After that I styled my hair and put on the only makeup that matters to me: eyeliner.
I checked the time. 7:43. I still had some time. I went back to my room and sat on my bed to put on a pair of socks and my usual Converse shoes. I packed my bag with everything I'd need for the day. Wallet, earphones, textbooks, notebooks, pencil case, all that stuff. Then I zipped it up and slung it over my shoulder. I pulled my phone out of my pocket and checked the time again. 7:47, Jasper would be here soon.
As I returned to the kitchen there was a knock on the door. I grabbed my Keychain as I walked over and opened to be met face to face, or rather face to chest, with Jasper.
"Whoa-" I said catching myself before I walked right into her.
She stepped back and to the side "Heh, sorry." She looked over my outfit "Damn, I'm seeing like 3 dress code violations right there."
I shrugged as I locked the house door and walked past her towards the still-running vehicle in my yard. It was an old 1995 Ford pick-up that appeared to have been restored a while back, it was a little rusty around the edges but still looked nice with its slightly worn orange and black paint. It was exactly what you'd expect someone like Jasper to drive. "Meh, I don't really give a fuck today. It's supposed to be hot as hell." I responded to her earlier statement.
She opened the drivers door and hopped into her seat with a laugh "Ha, I like you Lazuli. You're one rad chick."
I got int the passengers seat and put on my seatbelt with a smile "Thanks. You're chill too." I replied.

We were at the school no more than 10 minutes later, and we sat at the same table we had lunch at yesterday to get Jasper started on that Math homework. I pulled out my text book and Math notebook, she did the same. I glanced at her work, she had the first few questions done. "Alright Question 4." I announced "I had trouble with that one too, but it was pretty similar to the question 4 on the the homework from 2 days ago. I copied off Pearl yesterday and realize what I was doing wrong. So yeah basically what you do is you write down that formula, and then you change it around so the variables are with the variables and the actual numbers are with the actual numbers." I explained as I pointed to what I did in my book "see instead of that messy bullshit we got 4x3-6 = 2y-y now."
She wrote that down and the started talking " 4x3 is 12... And 12-6 is 6 so y is 6.... Right?"
I nodded "yeah! That's right!" I said with a smile. "Alright now on to number 5"
So we worked on it until the others started to arrive. We completed it all, and Pearl checked it over and she said we did pretty good. Peridot came over with some flyers "Hey guys! Did you know we have a robotics club?!" She said excitedly.
"Really?" Jasper questioned "Ha, that's lame. Count me out."
"We do?" Pearl spun around to face my best friend, she was obviously interested.
"Yeah! Take a look!" The green-eyed handed her a flyer that said is big bold letters 'Robotics Club seeking new members!' Along with some information about the club
Pearl read it over and then said she was in. Peridot was obviously also into it, so yeah. "What about you Lap-dawg? You in?"
I giggled at the weird nickname, she'd obviously been picking up on Amethyst's lingo. Amethyst was the only one I knew who could make up weird nicknames like 'Lap-dawg' for me and our friends.
I took a look at a flyer Peridot had handed me but frowned "I'd love to join Peri, but I'm busy after school a lot... You know... Work?" I handed it back to her and she frowned too.
Pearl clasped a hand down on Peridot's shoulder "Don't worry Peridot. At least you'll have me there"
Peridot's smile returned "Y-yeah! That's right!"
Amethyst and Garnet finally joined the crowd. "Hey! Peri-pal!" Amethyst raised a hand, asking for a high-five "what's up dude?"
Peridot high-fived the other "Amethyst! Ams.... Big A... Hey... You wanna join a robotics team with Pearl and I?" She showed her the flyer.
Amethyst didn't even look at it. She just shrugged "Sure, I'll give it a try."
Amethyst, Pearl, and Peridot all looked to Garnet asking if with their eyes if she was in too. "Why not" Garnet shrugged as well.
The bell rang and the four of them walked away towards their lockers as Peridot explained that the first robot they'd be assigned to make was going to be a little drill. Jasper and I already had what we needed so we didn't go with them.
"I'll see you in Drama okay?" I said to Jasper with a smile.
She nodded "yeah see ya Lazuli"
And we went our separate ways.

I actually saw Jasper again before Drama class though. But she didn't see me... Just before the end English I asked to go use the bathroom. I was excused and so I went to go do my business. As I was on my way back to my classroom, I just so happened to glance out a window and that's when I saw her. She was in the basketball court in her Gym clothes, she must've took gym so she could stay active since she wasn't going for any sports teams. But somethings was off. There were no other students in the court, and not a basketball to be seen. If Jasper wasn't playing basketball with her gym class, then why was she in the basketball court. I watched her as she cautiously looked around to see if anyone was watching, she didn't see me though, she didn't pay much attention to the windows. I watched as she pulled a box out of her pocket and pulled something out of it. I then watched as she.... lit a cigarette!?
Jasper smokes?! She's a smoker?! Wow, I didn't see that coming! Then again... I suppose it does kind of fit her character. I wonder how long she's been smoking? I wonder if she knows how bad it is for her health?
I watched as she took a couple puffs. The bell rang and she still had half the cig left. She flipped her wrist to an area I remember seeing multiple almost identical circular little patches of lighter skin, amongst a couple burn blisters earlier. I hadn't asked about it then, I thought maybe the marks were just an odd formation of her vitiligo, and that maybe she's burned herself last night, but it became clear as she pressed the burning cherry of the cigarette to her skin that she'd been using her wrist as an ashtray. She put the rest of the half-smoked cigarette in her case again and jogged over to where her class was heading back into the school.
I frowned as I made my way to Drama class. I thought that I should probably talk to her about this later. During class maybe?
I didn't talk her about it later however. I couldn't bring myself to say anything. If I brought it up, what would she do? What would she say? Would she be embarrassed? Maybe she wouldn't want to hang out with me anymore! So I just kept my mouth shut instead.
