I sighed as I walked down the crowded streets of the marketplace, with Tigriss at my heels. She was a black kitten with orange stripes, the opposite of a normal tiger. And she was tiny, just a little bigger than my foot. A runt. And because she was different, she was treated with hatred by everyone . . . except me. I treated her kindly because I knew how it felt to be different. I was an albino girl. With dull white hair, skin that never tanned, and very pale blue eyes, I was treated like a monster. Even my parents hated me. That's why I was out here walking. I just needed to get away.
Bina, I'm hungry, Tigriss meowed softly in my head.
I almost cried. She hadn't been fed in a while. If I could get her food, I would. My parents rarely gave me food and when they did, I always gave half to Tigriss. We were both hungry.
"I'll see if I can get something." I said quietly so no one overheard.
Stealing was a crime, and if you were caught, the punishment was severe.
