I'm starting off with one that a lot of people can't stand-- the love triangle . . .
Love triangles can be found all over entertainment and in my opinion, they aren't that great.
A love triangle typically revolves around three people. One person may like two people, but can't choose which one to be with. Or someone likes another, but the person they like loves someone else.
While love triangles can bring conflict in a story, they shouldn't be the main conflict in a story (at least in my opinion).
The way love triangles are portrayed in entertainment are unrealistic, some of the things people do while in a love triangle are ridiculous, a couple examples include when one character threatens another who is apart of the love triangle or when the characters start acting like middle school kids who are about in some drama.Love triangles can also be predictable. While reading or watching anything with a love triangle, you might most likely guess (correct) which character the main protagonist will choose to be with whether you like that character or not. An example of this can be the Twilight saga.
There are few times where it's harder to tell which character gets the main protagonist because it is less obvious.
While reading YA books, I tend to notice a lot of love triangles. Usually the main character is female, and two boys are in love with her (and the protagonist usually loves them back). It's an overused trope that I think doesn't need to be used as often as it is portrayed in entertainment. Especially in a world (usually dystopian) which insane shit is happening all the time and the main protagonist cannot focus on those problems without getting involved in a love triangle.
While I believe most love triangles are poorly done, there are some that I actually found entertaining. This is most likely because I like most (or all) the characters in the love triangle and it gives the story some funny scenes.
