This is a trope which I have mixed feelings about.
***In some cases, a character who is considered a bad boy is actually fascinating and interesting to learn about. I enjoy learning about the reasons to why the character acts the way he does, whether those reasons or good or not.
Seeing the way this character's actions and attitude influence the other characters is interesting as well.To the contrary, sometimes the bad boy character is annoying and whiny. No reasons are giving to the reader (or watcher) for why the character acts the way they do. They are simply an impediment to the rest of the cast of characters.
----------But now, I will discuss something that always makes me a little upset to see.
The following sentence (which can vary in wording) always annoys me whenever I see it:
"I can fix you."
----------That sentence bothers me. This sentence (and other variants of it) are seen everywhere in entertainment when a character(s) are trying to fix the "bad boy" character. This "fixing" can apply to other kinds of characters (antagonists and anti-heroes notably).
When I say fixing, I mean it when another character says they want to fix the bad boy's attitude, actions, and so on. Normally, this would not be such an annoying thing, since watching this bad boy character grow and mature as a character is good to see. These changes may actually help this bad boy character in different ways.
However, setting the bad boy see that his own actions and attitude are not okay makes the character's development more interesting instead of someone else saying: "I want to help/fix you." Again, not a bad thing for the most part. What bothers me, is when the bad boy changes only for a certain character(s).
This is not truly a change in the character's ways. Everyone around them should recognize the bad boy has developed as a character, not just one (or more depending). Seeing this bad boy do good things around one character, but not the others (even if the character does not like other characters featured), is aggravating.
There is no point to this change of attitude if it is only for one other person to see it, besides, sometimes the bad boy may be forced into this change.I think my point is made now, I could go on more though.
----------I apologize for not having specific examples for more detail, I could not think of any.
I also apologize if some of the contexts in this chapter were odd or confusing to read due to wording, these chapters are all rough drafts and I will revise them if there are errors. If I do find specific examples for bad boys changing just for one (or more) person(s) and do add more information, a second part for this trope will be made.
