~Chapter One~
Phoebe awoke in a daze. As she started to regain consciousness, she felt the strong winds whipping across her face causing her wavy brown hair to be released from its ponytail. Pressing her hands against what she assumed to be ground, Phoebe heard a clinking sound as her wrist began to sting with pain. She looked in the direction of the sting and didn’t know what to be more concerned over; the fact that her hands were confined by rusty shackles, or that she was being lifted countless feet in the air by the most mysterious beast she had ever seen. Coincidently, the eagle-headed beak was of more concern. It opened up its large golden feathered wings and soared across an open lake which illuminated the water to appear as clear as glass. Normally someone would take the time to enjoy this overwhelming sight, however, Phoebe did not due to her acrophobia (fear of heights).
This must be a dream… it has to be! she thought as her heartbeat began to quicken.
Thump… thump… thump… Phoebe’s heart pounded harder and faster each passing second after she realized her disconnection to the ground. She raised her hands up to her chest applying pressure towards her heart and began to hyperventilate. In a sad attempt to break free in her panic, Phoebe gnawed at her shackles, only to result in a bleeding lip. She noticed a set of cold hands wrap around her thin framed figure, sending an abrupt chill down her spine.
“Now, now, you know that’s not a good idea,” a silky, calm voice stated from behind her.
The man brushed his thumb across Phoebe’s lower lip, swiping away all the exterior blood. He then proceeded to wiping the blood over his lips and then licking them clean himself. This act made Phoebe cringe. She wondered what type of sick freak her captor was, licking off other people’s blood so suddenly with such satisfaction. She took this moment to observe her abductor. The man looked to be around his mid-twenties with a permanent scar over his left eye. There was a scent of cigarette smoke lingering off his long overcoat. She perceived him as treacherous and sturdy; however, being as tough as he appeared, the abductor still took the precautions to shackle her wrists together. Who knew what his intentions were.
Phoebe’s attention was drawn to the sound of the wind ripping through the sun-coloured feathers of the creature. Upon glancing at it once again, she realized it was only part eagle with the body of a golden lion. A fictional creature couldn’t exist. Phoebe desperately whether she was dreaming or not. That did not change her surrounding feelings one bit.
"Oh, you like Suzy?" said the man. Suddenly he released one hand from Phoebe’s waist and began stroking the feathers on the mystical creature's wings.
"A rare beast... Hard to find now a days, I can tell you." He smiled, showing large canine teeth.
Phoebe shrunk back a little, having been startled by the man’s teeth. All she knew was that she needed to get away from this man. She decided the best way to do anything at the moment would be to ask her kidnapper respectfully if he could explain the situation.
“Sir, where am I?”
"Sir? I like the sound of that," the kidnapper chuckled, revealing a rather witty grin. At least this way Phoebe wouldn’t have to stare at those overlarge eyeteeth.
Phoebe realized how stupid she may have sounded addressing her kidnapper so highly, but she felt the need to not intimidate him in her given situation.
