I thought the bookshelf would have kept them out. I thought they would be weaker. I was so wrong, shortly after we pack a cooler of food, the bookshelf crashes to the floor. Making all of us jump.
Five of them fall into the living room, flailing over each other.
Lydia grabs the cooler, Elliot grabs the bags, and I cover us, firing at the monsters. We run out the back door and around to the front of the house, four more wanders around the yard.
"Run!" I shout. Elliot and Lydia dash towards the car, as I stand and shoot.
I cock the bullet into the chamber and fire, one. Two. Three, all fall to the ground littering the yard.
I aim at the last one, but only end up shooting it in the shoulder.
A grown man, a bite mark in his cheek, walks towards me. I take out my knife, and charge at him. His arms wrap around me as we fall to to the ground.
I stab my knife into his forehead, blood gushes on to the face.
I slip out of his arms and run towards
the jeep, and climb into the back. Elliot tears down the drive way, as I wipe my face with my hand. Blood stains my hands, face and jacket, disgusting.
"What do we do?" Elliot asks, his blue eyes looking back at me in the rear view mirror.
"Find some place to go." Lydia says. "Some where close by."
I lean my head against the window, tall pine trees pass by. I feel gross, and lost somehow. Elliot and Lydia converse back and forth, making up ideas on where to go and what to do. I stay quiet, listening to them ramble on.
I pull my knees up to my chest, and breath deeply, inhale 1..2..3..4..5, exhale 1..2..3..4..5. Repeat.
"Lets go south." Lydia says after a while
"Why?" Elliot asks.
"It just-" She starts to say then I cut her off, "How about we drive until we get tired." I snap.
Neither of them speak, but Elliot nods. We drive down back roads, making our way south like Lydia said.

It's 9 pm when we pull into a rest stop, an hour away from the Illinois border.
Lydia runs to the bathroom, and I find a vending machine. I buy three cokes and a bag of gummy bears. Elliot leans his seat back, his eyes closed.
I slide into the front seat, "what did you get?" He mumbles.
"A Coke for all of us and gummy bears to share." I reply handing him a green one. Elliot pops it into his mouth and mumbles a thank you.
I watch Lydia jog back to the jeep, she narrows her eyes at me and climbs into the back seat. I hand her one of the bottles, "How was the bathroom?" I ask
She snatches the bottle, "Gross. Pretty sure a lady was getting high in the stall next to me." She takes a swig.
Elliot sits up, "Do we want to sleep here or find a place?"
"We shouldn't waste the money. We can sleep in here." Lydia says.
"Great. Cause I literally have no energy to drive." Elliot says as he falls back into his seat. He uses his Carhart  jacket as a blanket, and rolls into his side facing me.
I kick off my boots and lean my seat back as well. I hear Lydia behind me rustling around, trying to get comfortable.
"Goodnight." She says.
"Goodnight." Elliot and I say in unison.
Elliot reaches over and kisses me softly, loud gagging comes from the back seat.
