I watch the girl, my age, sink to the hard ground with a thump.
Ross slings the gun over her shoulder and climbs down quickly, I follow her.
She kneels over the girl and flips her over, revealing her face.
Liza Herman, the senior class valedictorian. I clasp my hands over my mouth, her skin was grey, her eyes weren't brown like how they used to be, instead where bloodshot and milky white. Blood leaked out of her skull, running how her cheek, staining the leaves she laid on.
Ross stood, "Let's leave her."
I look at my sister, "Leave her? Ross, her family needs to know what happened to her!"
"We shot her, Lyd. No one knows exactly what this is, so technically this is murder."
"What happened to the zombie theory?" I ask, folding my arms.
Ross takes out her knife and points to Liza's chest, "She's still warm. They don't change that quickly."
"So what is "this" then?" I raise my voice
"Something." Ross replies.
I let my arms fall to my sides, and march towards home.
I've had enough for one day.
----
I don't go home. Instead I walk into town, to get some things.
House lights are off, cars gone, doors shut. And not a person in sight.
I walk into a convenient store, and walk along the aisles. I pick up junk food, and a bottle of beer. I've never even had beer, but now seemed like a good time to try. I walk to the cash register, no one is there, "I'm ready." I shout.
Nothing. I look around, and slide the food into my backpack. Still no one, I throw it over my shoulder and walk out. No alarms sound and no one yells at me to stop, so I keep walking.
I open a bag of hot Cheetos and munch as I walk. This is actually really nice, silent country, no loud people, just me. I walk down the road that leads to the house, I'm secretly hoping Ross is flipping out that I'm not home. Change things up a bit, since I'm usually freaking out that she isn't home. As I walk, a hear an car engine behind me.
Great, peacefulness is now over. I move to the opposite side of the rode, as a blue jeep cruises next to me.
"Lydia!" They call my name.
I see Elliot behind the wheel, he waves his hand, "Get it!" He shouts.
I raise my eye brow, "Why?"
"A pack of them are coming this way!" He yells.
I turn my head, a large man slowly limp towards us, maybe two hundred feet back.
I don't take the chance, I run to the passenger side and climb into the jeep with , we speed down the road.
Elliot pulls into the drive way and run inside. Ross stands in front of couch, her hands on her hips, "Where the hell have you been!" She asks.
I smirk to myself, how does it feel now, Roslyn?
Elliot points out of the door, "There is a pack coming." He says quietly.
Ross curses, "Then barricade the door!"
We move the bookcase back in front of the door.
Afterwords, Ross and Elliot go upstairs and I say in the living room. I take out my food I bought...stole...and eat quietly. Trying to listen in on Ross and Elliot, but I hear nothing.
I bet they are making out.
I hear the group outside. In the road, no, close to the house. I get up and look out the window, three of them stumble across the driveway.
I bite my lip, go away! One of them, an older man with his left arm missing crashes into the porch, banging it's head on the wooden planks. I stifle a laugh, it's head snaps up, looking right at me.
I stumble back causing me to fall on to the floor.
I run up the stairs and crash into Ross's room, of course. They're making out.
Elliot falls off of Ross, her eye make up smudged making her look like a raccoon.
"They are outside." I tell her.
Ross sighs heavily, "We are safe."
Banging comes from downstairs.
"I don't know." I reply, looking out of her room.
More banging.
Elliot runs his fingers through his hair, "Maybe we should just get ready, in case." He says to Ross.
"Fine." She mutters. "Pack a few bags.
