Chapter 9: The Waiting Room

The hospital was big.
The biggest hospital I've ever seen.
The air had a weird fragrance to it, a bit like bleach with a touch of lemon as if they attempted to cover up the smell of bleach with something sweet but failed. I've always hated the smell of hospitals. The walls had a few scraps along them where hundreds of trolleys and wheelchairs had bumped into them. One of them being Joes. I could see the scrap along the long, white wall which happened to be the one made by Joes trolley.

Me, Zoë, Caspar, Niomi, Marcus, Tanya, Jim and Louise had been sitting in the waiting room for over an hour. Literally everyone was here except from Alfie who seemed to still be with the police. So many thoughts were running around in my mind like if joe was going to be okay and what's going to happen to Alfie.
What if Alfie doesn't get out of it? What if joe doesn't make it?
This is NOT what I was expecting my first holiday abroad to be like.

"You okay Chloe? Want to go and get a bite to eat?" asked Jim.
"Oh no I'm okay thankyou, I'll get something out of the vending machine when I'm feeling a bit peckish." We were all supposed to be going out until disaster struck, and we can't go out now because we need to wait for Joe to see if he's okay. Another thing is it's Joes holiday too, we can't just go out without him..
Jim was probably the calmest out of all of us sitting here. Louise looked as if she was sinking into her chair, her foot tapping the ground and her leg bouncing up and down. She was obviously nervous. Tanya had her head on Jim's shoulder, looking like she was about to fall asleep at any moment.
I was sitting next to Zoë, my hand being held gently in her hand. It was cold in this waiting room. I felt as cold as a snowman, sitting statue still in the middle of a family's back garden. I've never made a proper snowman before, but I remember Joe and Zoë making snowmen while the beautiful winter snowflakes fell from the sky. It didn't really bother me as I've never been a very outdoors person, I've always preferred staying inside in the warmth and I enjoyed watching my older brother and sister making snowmen outside. I can only imagine how cold their hands were picking up all the snow, even though they had gloves on.
I know this wouldn't happen anymore, and I'm really looking forward to Christmas this year.

It will be my first proper Christmas with my whole family.

Well at least that what I'm hoping...
