[Authors Note: this story is already finished, and I wrote it on Quizilla quite some time ago. It's the third story EVER I finished, so I am pretty proud of it. It's far from perfect, but I am not planning on editing on it. Please comment to tell me what you think, but I am not gonna change this story. It's good the way it is, and though it has some lesser parts, it is an old story and very dear to me.]

‘Come on now, Marie.’ I heard Sky complain. ‘What’s taking you so long?’

‘In a minute!’ I yelled back.

For the hundredth time that evening, I looked in the mirror. My knee-length white dress looked quite nice on me and my long brown hair fell over my shoulders, looking perfect. I sighed deeply and tried to calm down a bit. I was slightly nervous, since I didn’t know what to expect. Sky and Suse had been planning my birthday party for weeks now, and tonight it was finally there. It was really nice of them to arrange this, especially now, with all of us worrying about what had become of Hogwarts. Once, it had been our haven, our second home. Nowadays, it was more like hell. With Snape being headmaster and the Arrows teaching, Hogwarts was no safer than any other place in England.

‘Marie!’ Sky shouted, irritated now. ‘Everyone’s already in the common room, and it’s your party.’

‘Coming!’ I answered.

I unlocked the bathroom door and stepped into the dormitory. Sky and Suse gasped in unison when they saw me.

‘Marie... wow.’ Suse breathed. ‘You’re wearing... a dress!’

I grinned nervously. ‘I know, I’m not used to it.’

‘Well, get used to it. You look great.’ Sky complimented me. ‘I told you so yesterday, didn’t I? Dresses are perfect for you.’

I smiled at Sky’s smug face and took in her outfit. She was wearing a pair of simple dark blue jeans, with a very cute top above it. It was black, with a deep V-neck and bare shoulders. It looked really nice, especially on her light brown skin, which was perfectly smooth. Her black hair was frizzy, as always.

‘You look great yourself.’ I told her with an appreciating smile.

She shrugged. ‘I wanted to wear my yellow sundress, but Suse wanted to borrow it so badly I gave in.’

‘Thanks again.’ Suse said, hugging her gratefully. ‘I just have to look good tonight.’

‘I know, I know, you want to look good for Dave, cause you’ve been together for six months now.’ Sky said, rolling her eyes. ‘But you don’t need my dress for that, you always look stunning.’

‘That’s not true!’ Suse protested, curling one of her blond locks around her finger.

I laughed. I really had the two best friends in the whole wide world. Even this year, with all those terrible things happening at Hogwarts, I enjoyed being here. Hogwarts had always meant more for me than just a school, a haven or a second home. It was the place I’d met Sky and Suse. We’d only been first years back then, but now – seven years later – we still were best friends.

‘Let’s go down.’ Sky was obviously bubbling with excitement.

She and Suse grabbed my wrists and pulled me with them down the stairs. Right before the corner, they stopped. I tried to peek around it, but Suse wouldn’t let me.

‘Just wait one moment.’ she said excited. ‘Sky’s going to introduce you.’

‘No!’ I said shocked. I didn’t want all eyes focused on me, especially not when I was wearing a white dress in which I still didn’t feel entirely comfortable.

Sky descended the stairs around the corner and said loudly: ‘May I have your attention for tonight’s birthday girl... Marie!’

Suse pushed me forward with such force I had no choice but to descent the stairs further. I was greeted by almost all the Ravenclaw students with loud cheering. I smiled shyly and walked into the room, Sky and Suse at my side. The moment I left the stairs, music started playing. Several sixth years started dancing in the middle of the circular room, singing along with the song and laughing. I noticed the room was filled with not only students of my year and some friends from the year below, but with students of all ages. From first years to seventh years, everyone was enjoying themselves.

‘You invited everyone?’ I asked Sky with raised eyebrows.

‘Of course, the party’s in the common room, I could hardly tell the younger students to get out of here.’ she explained. ‘Besides, everyone needs a bit of distraction nowadays. It doesn’t matter if they really know you or not – it’s all about having a good time and for once not having to worry.’

I smiled and nodded. I was kind of grateful for the fact that this party wasn’t all about me. I didn’t like being the centre of attention, it made me shy and uncomfortable.

‘Let’s dance, shall we?’ Suse said, pulling Sky and me with her toward the dance floor.

The music was really good – the newest album of the Weird Sisters – so I swirled around on the beat happily. I felt like a really long time ago we’d had a party at Hogwarts. It must have been before Snape became headmaster, so that would be a year ago.

‘Hey, Marie.’ someone behind me said.

I turned and saw Victoria and Daisy beaming at me. I greeted them with two tight hugs and smiled when they congratulated me. They were both two years below me, but they were really nice. Sky, Suse and I sometimes hung out with them and their friends. When they were gone, I returned to my friends and started dancing again.

‘Marie?’

I immediately stopped dancing when I heard a certain boy call my name. Slowly, I turned around to face him, my eyes wide. He surely couldn’t be here, could he?

‘Marie, is that you?’
