Chapter 11

 ‘We’re going to go to the side of the Black lake.’ Kingsley announced to the little group before him. ‘The Merpeople have volunteered to participate in the war. If we drive the Death Eaters to the side of the lake, they will grab them and pull them down with them. Don’t be afraid, they won’t be drowned. They will be brought into unconsciousness and held hostage until the battle is over. We’re no murderers, we just defend our castle and of course Harry. The Merpeople won’t hurt us, but be careful not to fall into the lake anyway. The dark is confusing and there are still Grindylows in the water to pull you under, and they will drown you.’

I shuddered at the thought and felt a reassuring hand being placed onto my shoulder.

‘We’re going to make it.’ the huge red-head said. ‘Nothing to fear.’

‘I wouldn’t say that, Charlie.’ another red-haid said. ‘It’s all pretty risky.’

‘I know, Bill, I know.’ Charlie sighed. ‘All right – are you and Fleur ready?’

‘We are.’ the beautiful girl at Bill’s side said with a smile. I recognized her as Fleur Delacour, one of the participants of the Triwizard Tournament.

‘Cho?’ Charlie asked.

‘Yeah, ready.’ Cho Chang had her wand clutched in her hand. ‘Let’s go.’

‘Marie!’

Suse and Sky gave me a group-hug.

‘I love you so much.’ Suse cried. ‘Good luck.’

‘See you later – love you.’ Sky murmured.

‘Love you too.’ I sniffed. ‘Good luck.’ When I let them go, they smiled tentatively at me. We didn’t know what to say.

‘Come on, Sky.’ Andrew said, putting an arm around her shoulders. ‘Let’s go kill some ugly giants.’

‘Bye, bro.’ Owen said softly. ‘Take care.’

‘I’ll see you later.’ Andrew promised. ‘Take care of Owen.’ He winked at me. ‘You’re a way better fighter than he is.’

I grinned. ‘Good luck, Andrew.’

‘Suse – we’ve got to go.’ Dave announced. ‘Bye, Marie.’ He hugged me closely.

‘Take good care of her.’ I whispered in his ear. ‘Promise me that much.’

‘I promise.’ he whispered back. ‘Come on – Flitwick is waiting, we’ve got to go to the Ravenclaw Tower!’ he tugged Suse with him and waved at Owen. ‘See you later!’

All around us, others finished their “I love you”s and “goodbye”s. It was time to go.

‘Follow me.’ Kingsley boomed, gesturing toward us.

Owen, Cho, Charlie, Bill, Fleur and I followed him closely into the grounds. Kingsley showed us how to line up and gave us a few words of comfort before he braced himself for the fight.

Owen was holding my hand and he squeezed it encouragingly. ‘We can do this, Marie.’ he said firmly. ‘And remember – I love you.’

‘I love you too.’ I smiled sweetly. ‘But you’ll have to let go of my hand now – I’ll need both.’

‘Oh – right.’

‘Look!’ Fleur yelled. ‘Ze are coming!’

And indeed, several dark figures were running in our direction. I braced myself and leaned forward in a crouch. I was ready for it.
