‘Hey, guys.’ Dave said with a smile.
‘Hey.’ Owen answered, not lifting his arm from my shoulder when he half-turned to look at him. ‘Hi, Suse.’
‘Hey, Owen, Marie, Andrew, Sky.’ she greeted all of us individually. ‘You look better!’ she exclaimed, looking at Owen in surprise. ‘I thought you weren’t allowed to-’
‘I didn’t.’ he interrupted her. ‘Marie fixed me up.’
‘Oh, I didn’t even think of that! Otherwise I’d have done it myself.’ she said, shaking her head. ‘Anyway – it’s beautiful outside. Would you guys like to join us?’
‘Sure.’ Sky already jumped up.
Owen, however, eyed me questioning. I smiled at him and nodded. ‘All right, we’re in.’ he decided, pulling me off the bench.
‘Mind of I join you?’ Andrew asked hesitantly.
‘Of course not.’ Dave said, frowning.
I understood Dave’s confusion. After all, Andrew hang out with us quite often. Of course, he had his own friends, in his own year, but he was on good terms with his brother, Owen, and the rest of us considered him a friend. Except for Sky, maybe, cause she and Andrew always had this strange kind of tension going on between them. To her, he was more than just a friend, although she denied it, as she thought that was for the best.
‘I have to go to the toilet first.’ Sky said suddenly, her expression alarmed. ‘Marie, Suse?’
‘Coming.’ I replied.
Both of us rushed to her side. I thought I heard Owen mutter something like ‘girls... can’t even go to the toilet on their own’, but I wasn’t sure. I turned and smiled sweetly at him.
‘I’ll be right back.’ I promised, hurrying after Suse and Sky, who were leaving already.
As I’d expected, we weren’t heading for the toilets at all. Sky led us straight into a deserted corridor. Her expression was almost panicked when she turned to face us. Suse and I raised our eyebrows at each other. This wasn’t like Sky at all...
‘What’s wrong?’ Suse wrapped an arm around her shoulders.
‘I can’t hang out with you today.’ she said sadly. ‘Not when it’s just the six of us.’
I frowned. ‘Why not? We hang out all the time. Last Wednesday, we were together – just the six of us.’
‘That was different.’ Sky sighed. ‘You weren’t with Owen back then.’
‘So?’ I said surprised. ‘What’s the difference?’
‘Don’t you see?’ she said softly, facing the ground. ‘It’s not only Dave and Suse, like it used to be, there are two couples now. Two couples and me – and Andrew.’
‘You think it will be awkward.’ Suse realized.
‘Yeah... I don’t want to make things... awkward.’ she whispered. ‘I’m sorry.’
‘Don’t apologize.’ I said shocked. ‘I’ll just stay with you...’ My stomach turned at that thought. Of course, it was more important to comfort Sky than to be with Owen right now. But still, it was our first day as a real couple.
‘No!’ Sky protested right away. ‘Not on your first day as Owen’s girlfriend.! And you’re not staying with me either.’ she told Suse severely. ‘I’ll just join the twins.’
She obviously meant the Patil twins, Parvati and Padma, two good friends of ours. But they went into hiding when the school turned into the hell it was nowadays.
