It was Friday, the last day of school in the week, the day before Ray’s party. As ‘the popular one’, I had been to many parties in my life, but none of them had made me feel nervous before. I was worried to go to Ray’s party. Loads of people were going to be there that I knew; Dylan, Brad, Aaron and the rest of the guys, Tanya and the girls… but I also knew there were going to be lots of people that I didn’t know.
One of them would be Ray’s boyfriend.
Ray had refused to break up with him so far; he said that he thought it was better to do it in person. I thought that was a bad idea; this guy was going to come all the way here from Portsmouth just to be told that his boyfriend was breaking up with him. Ouch.
I was also worried about the amount of alcohol that would be there. I can never go to a party without getting drunk and I was worried that if I had too much to drink I would have poor judgement and kiss Ray in front of my friends. I wasn’t ready for them to know. Not yet.
It was lunchtime, one more lesson to go, and I was putting my books away in my locker. I’d just about locked it when someone grabbed my arm and pulled me into the boys changing rooms. There were some year sevens in there, not getting changed, just sitting.
“C’mon you guys, get out! Out, out, OUT!” Ray shouted, clapping his hands to speed them up as they scrambled to their feet and ran from the room.
He held the door open for them as they left and then turned the latch off on the door so that when it shut it was locked to anyone on the other side who didn’t have the key.
“Ray, what’re you doing?” I asked. He made me wait whilst he checked there was no-one else in the room, and then he pulled me close for a kiss.
“I… couldn’t… wait… until… tomorrow…” he said between kisses.
He pulled on my school tie so it came loose and hung it over one of the coat hooks before undoing the top button on my shirt and slipping his hand under my collar, making me shiver as he stroked my neck.
“People will… wonder… where we… are…” I gasped between kisses.
“Let them wait.” he replied.
He pushed me down onto the bench and then sat on my lap as he kissed me.
Ten minutes later we went back to form.
“Hey, Ash, where you been?” Aaron asked.
“Just showing Ray some stuff on my guitar in the music block. We… lost track of time.” I said with a grin that no-one would guess the true meaning of.
We sat down and tried to catch up on their conversation.
Ray had only let me introduce him to my friends the day before. He was the most confident person I knew, and yet the thought of meeting my friends had made him truly and extremely nervous.
It seemed their question hadn’t finished yesterday.
“Hey, Ray, you got a girlfriend?” Brad asked him.
Ray paused for a moment and his jaw locked before he answered.
“Actually, I have a boyfriend.”
Silence.
“Wait, what?”
“I have a boyfriend.” he repeated.
I started to scratch at the back of my hand, as I always did when I am nervous.
“You’re a gay?”
