"Dean?" Cas' voice wakes Dean from his sleep. It's still dark, but the sun is starting to rise.
"Hmm," Dean wakes up. "What's wrong?"
"Why are you sleeping out here?" Cas asks.
"I had a dream, I needed to be alone." Dean sits up. Cas scoots onto the couch next to him, curling up next to Dean. Dean keeps picturing Cas dead like he was in his dream.
He can't fall back to sleep, though Cas does with ease. Dean slips away from Cas. He needs to clear his mind, there are only two ways that will help. One is very easy to do and the other is murder. Since he doesn't have a good enough plan for killing Meg, so he does the next best thing; drive.
He grabs his keys and heads out to his car. It's starts with a purring roar as always. As he drives he sorts through the mess of his mind. He's going to kill Meg, that's for sure, his mind is set on it and there's no going back. He continues to drive aimlessly.
As for Cas, he can hardly think strait. That dream and the dream before it are stuck in his mind, swirling and flowing together. They keep replaying in his mind over and over. As it does, a decision comes to his mind. The more he thinks about it the more it sounds like a good idea, he has to do it. It's the only way. So by the time Dean pulls into his driveway, his mind is set on Cas too.
The sun is risen and shining brightly by the time Dean walks into his house.
"Hey, where'd you go?" Cas asks as he pours himself a cup of coffee. He's wearing a maroon hoodie Dean had hanging up in his closet and a pair of gray sweatpants. It looks good on him, but Dean ignore that.
"We need to talk." Dean says, folding his arms.
"Of course," Cas nods. "You know I enjoy our talks, our time together." Cas sits in one of the chairs at the kitchen table. Dean takes a seat on the edge of the table, not needing a chair. It's hard for him to get it out, but he has to.
"We can't be together anymore." Dean chokes out.
"What?" Cas frowns, staring up at Dean like he had misheard him.
"We can't-" Dean takes a deep breath. "We can't be together anymore."
"What's wrong? Why are you saying this?" Cas has tears pooling in his eyes. They've only been together for a short couple of months, but Cas has fallen hard for Dean. This isn't easy for Dean, he has developed feelings for Cas too, but he doesn't want Cas to be hurt.
"I just feel like we don't work well together, and I think you would be better off with someone else, someone who isn't me." Dean struggles to get these words out.
"That's a damn lie and you know it." Cas fights back tears.
"I'll drop you off at your place," Dean's face is stony and he looks away from Cas.
"Dean, don't do this, I love you, and I know you love me too." Cas stands.
"I'm sorry, Cas, but it's not working out. I'll see you out in the car." Dean stands and stalks out to his car. This is what's best for Cas, he keeps telling himself. Cas will be safer this way.
Dean slides into the front seat for the second time today. He slams his hand against the dash board. He doesn't want this, but he doesn't want Cas to be hurt even more.
Cas comes shuffling out, wearing the clothes he wore last night, his hair still disheveled from sleep. Seeing him walking out, with a look of despair on his face, it awakens a feeling in Dean that he hasn't felt before; sadness.
Cas slides into the passenger seat, glancing over at Dean solemnly. Dean starts the car, ignoring his looks.
The drive to Cas' apartment is quiet. Dean refuses to acknowledge Cas, knowing that if he does, he won't be able to let him go. He pulls to a stop in front of the building.
"Goodbye, Cas," Dean glares out the windshield, unable to look at the man beside him.
"Dean," Cas' voice breaks. "Dean, please." Dean finally looks over.
"This is the best thing for you." Dean forces out.
"No," Cas shakes his head. "This is." He leans forward and presses his lips to Dean's. It's a soft kiss full of love, passion, and sadness.
"Cas," Dean pulls away. "You need to go." With a nod, Cas steps out of the car and walks into his building dejectedly.
Dean has never felt this pain of leaving someone before. Never felt this deep regret and as if his heart is shattering in his chest. And as he drives away, a tear slips down his face. He hopes this feeling will go away soon. Maybe a good kill will help.
Of all the things Dean has done in his life, leaving Cas is the one that he regrets the most.
