Chapter 1- Charlotte Pheebs

Percy Jackson. God, even his name gave me chills. Percy was like a warm summer breeze or the sound of the sea's waves crashing against the rocks- he radiated beauty and joy.

I had only known him a few months, but I had a pretty serious crush on him. It was so dumb! Just a stupid school-girl crush on the hottest guy in school. You can't say I ever make my life easy.

I had promised myself that I would never make a move on Percy Jackson because while he was amazing, humble and sweet, I was just... well, me. Average little old me; boring brown hair and eyes to match; not pretty and not ugly; average grades; average everything. The only thing that wasn't average was my height. Imagine trying to blend in with a swarm of high-school girls when you're nearing on six foot. It's not easy.

Anyway, I knew that I wasn't good enough for Percy and I never would be. I imagined him growing up to live a picket-fence lifestyle with a lovely wife and kids. I imagined Percy growing up to have a nuclear family- meanwhile, I was just nuclear. I managed to break everything I touched and I was terrified that I would break Percy if I got too close.

So, I adopted the role of best friend and protector of Percy Jackson. Every single time a girl tried to flirt with Percy who I deemed as unworthy (which was all of them) I'd help Percy to send them away. We told them that Percy had a girlfriend in San Francisco- I had no idea if that was true or not- and that he wasn't interested.

More often than not, Percy was just absolutely clueless about girls flirting with him, so I had to send them packing or just tell Percy that they were trying to flirt with him. In that case, he'd just flush an adorable shade of red and politely reject them.

Every time a girl approached him, I had to pretend that I wasn't jealous or that I didn't feel a slight sting inside when I saw how beautiful or smart that girl was. Seeing these unworthy girls drool over him was agony, but I had to pretend I was okay.

"Hey Charlie!" Percy called across the hallways and he fought his way through the crowds of students to meet me at my locker. His troublemaker smile stretched across his face as he calmly booted students out of his way. "Come here. There's someone I want you to meet."

Without waiting for me reply, he began to tug me through the halls and I had to quickly reach to slam my locker shut before he began to propel us through the sea of people. I had never seen Percy so excited about something before and, I hate to say it, it made me sad to know that it wasn't me who made him ecstatic.

Still, I laughed as he tugged me behind him. "Percy, where are we going? Who am I meeting?"

Finally, he stopped next to a picnic bench with a beautiful blonde sitting on it, reading what seemed to be a book on Greek architecture.

"Annabeth!" The girl's head shot up as soon as she heard Percy call her name and jumped off the bench to hug him tightly and press her lips tenderly to his. "I can't believe your finally back in New York."

Annabeth pressed another quick kiss to his lips. "It feels like forever ago since we left camp. I've missed you, Seaweed Brain."

"I've missed you too, Wise Girl."

Okay, so clearly Percy's girlfriend excuse was true. But this girl wasn't the same as the others, there was something about the idea of her and Percy being together that seemed... right. Like two pieces of a puzzle finally fitting together.

I tightened my jaw and tried to bite back the tears that filled my eyes, ignoring the sharp pain in my chest, as I realised that this was the only girl who might be worthy of Percy and I'd have to bury my pathetic little crush on him.

"Oh, uh, Annabeth this is uh..." Percy began to introduce us, but was too entranced in Annabeth's smile to finish.

"Charlotte," I supplied for him. I held my hand out for Annabeth to shake, smiling warmly (or what I hoped was warmly). "But my friends call me Charlie."

The girl shook my hand and said, "I'm Annabeth. I'm glad Percy found a good friend at this school. You been keeping him in check?"

I shook my head in mock exasperation. "He's hard work, but I try my best."

Annabeth laughed and said, "You seem pretty cool. Look, we've got to head off now, but on Saturday we're going to the movies with a group of friends. Would you like to join us?"

"That'd be great!" Annabeth gave me her number and Percy bid me a quick farewell before they began to walk away. Percy's arm was looped over Annabeth's shoulder and they kept laughing at something that Percy was saying.

They were the most adorable and perfect couple I had ever seen. A stupid pigeon landed next to me and looked up at me as if it were saying, Well, you found the perfect girl for Percy Jackson- now what?

I actually answered the pigeon in a public place surrounded by people from my school. "I pretend I never loved him and I go to the movies. Just like a best friend should."

If people noticed the crazy teenager talking to the pigeon, they didn't say anything. I slung my backpack over my shoulder and began to make my way home, thinking about how happy Annabeth made Percy and knowing that I never could have made him smile so blissfully.
