Dr. Chloe Harper.
"Gods, I don't know about this, Annabeth." I heard the deep, silky voice from the other side of the wooden door from where I sat at my desk. As I waited for my clock to strike exactly four o'clock, I rearranged the photographs on my desk so that they were perfectly in place.
"Percy, we promised Chiron we would try seeing a psychiatrist together." A calming, higher-pitched voice responded to the first one I had heard. "Stop fidgeting, it'll be fine."
I heard the boy sigh exactly as my clock chimed four o'clock. I stood up from behind my desk, tugged on the hem of my black knee-length pencil skirt and tucked a wayward piece of hair behind my ear before walking over to the door.
I opened the door to find a girl with curled blonde hair and a boy with messy black hair hovering on the other side of the door. I welcomed them into my room, noticing the boy's nervous fidgeting, and began to introduce myself as they sit themselves down on the couch.
"Good afternoon, I'm Dr.Harper and you must be Percy and Annabeth Jackson, am I correct?"
"It's Annabeth Chase, actually," the girl said, smiling a little awkwardly.
"My apologies, Miss Chase." I switch my attention to the boy who was rapidly tapping his foot. "Now, Percy, would you like to begin by telling me why you think you are here."
"Well," he begins, reaching out to place a hand on Annabeth's knee. For most couples, this move was a sign of possession and control and for some, it was a sign of love. With this strange boy, it was most certainly a show of love, but there was something else there too. It seemed as if by creating this connection with Annabeth, he was showing his loyalty and protectiveness of her while also drawing strength and courage from her. I could instantly tell that they were a perfectly matched team- they were equals.
"Annabeth and I... we recently went through a traumatic experience. I guess we're just struggling to find ways to deal with what's happened and move forward."
I could tell that Percy was choosing his words carefully, fearful of how much he was telling me, similar to many clients.
"Tell me Percy, what kind of traumatic experience are you recovering from? A car accident? A fire? A shooting?" I leant forward on my chair, eager to learn about this peculiar pair.
Percy seemed to check with Annabeth before speaking. "A distant relative of mine tried to kill us both and kept us in... a dark place, for a long time."
"I see," was all I said for a brief moment. "And where is this relative now?"
"A place he won't be able to hurt us," Annabeth chimed in, "for a while, at least."
"Have you ever talked about what happened while you were in that place? Have you discussed how you feel about it?" I could feel my mind ticking over their careful, vague words. There was certainly something they were keeping from me.
The couple shared a long look and the girl's lip trembled as she grasped onto the hand the boy had on her knee. Percy placed a gentle kiss against her temple, a flutter of a kiss to remind Annabeth that they were strong and that they were together.
"We talk sometimes," Percy stated, "but only to each other..."
"Don't you think that's unhealthy?" I asked, leaning forwards over my desk. "To rely on each other so much, I mean."
"No," Percy simply stated, as if there were no other answers.
"I can see that the two of you are very close, but I'm not certain that this method of coping is effective." I shook my head as I spoke to convey what I was saying. "After two people experience a traumatic event together, they may find that they think it's best to stick together, when really remaining with that person just acts as a constant reminder of what you went through."
