(Just now realizing I originally posted chapter thirteen on Christmas Eve instead of fourteen. Basically this chapter has never been read before, great)
School has been a pain and nuisance. Nothing makes sense. How in the world am I supposed to memorize all these science formulas if I don't even have a good memory? It'd be nice if I had super intelligence instead of telekinesis. At least then the power would actually be useful. Morgan is lucky, she could just find the answer to things with mind reading.
I'm sitting in art class, wasting time away until it's time to go home. A blank piece of paper sits in front of me, waiting to be filled with drawings. The only problem is I have a total artists block. I have no clue what to draw. The shadow figure comes to mind and shivers run down my spine.
I had nightmares the few nights after the figure destroyed the den. Morgan and I did the best we could with cleaning up the room, but the broken tv was a no brainier. We made up an elaborate lie about what happened. We only bent the truth some, to be honest. The story was that someone broke in and must've gotten scared off when they heard me and cayley upstairs. See? We bent the truth. It wasn't a blatant lie like it seems. I mean, what were we supposed to say? A shadow monster broke in? Everyone would think we were crazy at that point.
I start sketching out the shadow figure, first its shape and then the mist around it. In a pencil pouch beside me lays out all of my artist pencils with different softness and shading. I smear the pencil marks on my paper and sketch up to a point where I have a drawing that looks exactly like the figure. It's eerily creepy how good my memory served me in terms of remembering the figure.
I almost, almost, jump and make my pencils, all twenty two of them to be exact, go flying when someone suddenly speaks from behind me, but I keep it in. "What's that supposed to be?"Simon says, pointing at my drawing. I shrug nonchalantly and say "A random drawing. It's not really not supposed to be anything."
I look behind my back and across the room to where Morgan sits. Just by the look on her face, I know exactly what she's thinking, and it terrifies me that I'm thinking the same thing. What if Simon was the shadow figure. That makes no sense, though. How could he even know where we live? Where I live?
I turn my attention back to Simon and tease "Why? Are you afraid of the big scary monster?" He rolls his eyes and says "No, the drawing just interested me. I'm an artist myself too so." As he walks back to his seat I get out of my own, walking over to where Morgan sits and crouching down.
"That was a risky move, you know,"Morgan says to me. I furrow my eyebrows and say "What? What on earth are you talking about?" She nods her head towards the teacher's desk and says "Walking over here while Mrs.Cobb is at her worst. You're lucky she didn't see you and cut your eyes out." I scrunch up my nose and say "Ew, thanks for the mental picture."
Morgan shrugs and starts drawing again. Today is a free day where were allowed to draw anything we want but we have to be drawing. Morgan was sketching out a wolf howling up at the moon. "So I had a thought."I start and she cuts me off and says "And what's that?" I give her a quick scowl that tells her to be quiet so I can talk and she rolls her eyes in return.
"I was thinking, what if the shadow figure was actually a person? And they had powers like us. It's not that big of a coincidence really. I mean, us getting powers and that figure showing up at my freaking house around the same time. Maybe the figure didn't just have the ID card but maybe that was it's ID card. Maybe the shadow figure was Trevor Moore." I pause and lean over so I'm right in Morgan's field of view.
"Are you even listening to me?"I ask with eyebrows raised. She shakes her head and says gleefully "Nope." My jaw drops an inch and then she looks over at me and says "I read your mind before you even started talking you dope. And I think you're right."
Morgan looks past me and at Simon sitting at his desk. I follow her gaze and say "Does that mean we can take Simon off the list of possibly being the shadow figure?" Morgan nods in response and says "Yeah, he doesn't really look like a Trevor to me." I roll my eyes and then say "Instead of going on your intuition read his mind, Sherlock. Tell me what you find out on the walk home."
Morgan watches as I stand up and says "Where are you going?" I cross my arms and say "Going back to my seat so I don't get my eyes gouged out." Morgan scrunched up her whole face and says "You're right, it does serve a grotesque mental picture." Once more I roll my eyes then sneak back to my seat. Just as my bottom touches the cool plastic seat the bell rings, telling everyone to grab their stuff and go to their buses.
Most of the time Morgan and I just walk home since our neighborhood is right next to the school. Though, we do have a fairly large hill to walk up. To find our way around lugging our backpacks up the steepest hill in the universe we normally take a shortcut through the woods. This accomplishes us gradually walking higher instead of straight up like climbing up a mountain.
Morgan walks past me and out of Mrs.Cobb's class with all her stuff already together. My pencils are scattered across my desk and there are heaps of papers with random sketches on them. Do what else but sketch when you have an hour and a half to draw? The only real drawing was the one of the shadow figure, which I stuff underneath the stack of papers.
I'm the last one in the class by the time I have all my stuff together. Just as I exit I see Mrs.Cobb give me the stink eye. It's not my fault I'm a disorganized mess. Well, I guess technically it is.
I go to my locker and put all my stuff in my bookbag. When I say stuff I mean my drawings and two science textbooks I have to read for my test tomorrow. I exit the school and gaze over the crowd of students walking into the parking lot. Morgans nowhere in sight. Maybe she just went on ahead.
I walk down alongside the road leading from the school and into the main road. A police officer is directing traffic so I wait until it's my turn to go across the crosswalk. When the police officer stops the cars he signals me to go. I sprint across the road and to the sidewalk.
When I reach the entrance leading to my neighborhood with the mountainous hill I cut into the woods. Morgan still is nowhere to be found. Maybe she took the bus today and forgot to tell me. It's very unlike her to do something like that, though.
I walk through the woods one step at a time, leaves crinkling underneath my feet. In the distance, I see a head of blond and am relieved instantly out of my mind. "Morgan!"I call out, picking my speed up to a slight jog. She turns around and says "'It took you long enough slow poke."
I catch up and start walking at the same speed as her. I scoff and say "Well you should see the weight on these textbooks they have us reading. They slow me down to grandma speed." Morgan rolls her eyes and says "Grandmas are relatively fast. More like turtle speed." I take off my bookbag and place it around her shoulders.
"Fine," I tease, "Then how about you carry them." We stop at a medium sized rock and take a seat. "So I got nothing from Simon. It's like I couldn't read his mind or something."She tells me, giving my backpack back. "Hm,"I respond.
I pull Trevor Moore's ID out of my pocket and flip it around in my hands. "You brought that with you to school?"Morgan asks. I nod and say "Trevor broke into my house once. Who's to say he won't do it again to find his ID card."
Morgan nods her head solemnly and then says "We should probably get walking if we ever wanna make it home." I stand up and start walking, her following behind. "I know one thing for certain."
Morgan runs up beside me and asks "And what's that?" I look down at the ID card once more, reading the facility's name. The Edison Facility. "When we get home," I start, "We're doing some research and finding out what's going on."
