Jamie slightly turned his head and produced an uneasy smile. The gem two feet away stared blankly at him. She saw the possibility of him sparking a conversation, but it died as soon as he looked away with a blush that swallowed his face. Good God.
"Jamie," she sighed. It came out more exasperated than she intended.
"Yes Garnet?"
She studied him as he tried his hardest to keep his cool.
"How are you?"
Easy question. Shouldn't be too complicated.
"Er, I'm doing all right. I took your advice with theater."
His shoulders relaxed and his whole body seemed to relax as he mentioned his passion. All the nervousness was washed away and replaced with a newfound confidence. He was no longer red.
"Good. I'm glad."
"Yeah. Thank you for that by the way. I don't think I ever would have taken that chance if you didn't open my eyes. I'm really grateful."
She gave him a gracious smile and nodded.
"Any time."
There was an instant pause before Garnet was caught off guard for yet the second time that day. She looked down at her waist and chest, laced with light tan arms and a head nuzzled in the crook of her shoulder. And she took a moment of consideration.
Her magenta arms found themselves returning the warmth she felt. It wasn't Steven's warmth, but it was warmth none the less. And it gave her a bubbly feeling she would never care to admit aloud.
He held on as long as he could, engulfed, wrapped in her arms. If only the moment would last an eternity.
But he pulled away, not wanting to make her uncomfortable.
"That was nice ," he said, a grin slowly forming.
"Yes. It was."
Her eyes nomadically roamed her surroundings before sighing.
"Jamie. I don't want you to be alone. I don't want you to ever be sad. If you need someone to talk to.... I'm here."
Her eyes found his again and she offered a small sympathetic smile. This situation was something she'd never thought would happen. Ever. She didn't offer advice to humans very often, and she never offered to be a shoulder to cry on. She didn't know how to feel about it. It was just....... weird.
Jamie on the other hand; his heart pounding excitedly, his words stuck in his throat, and his eyes glistening produced a smile full of teeth and happiness and gratitude.
"Thank you, Garnet. I- I really appreciate it. You know you don't have to-"
"No."
Jamie was taken aback.
"It's okay," she soothed. "I insist."
He relaxed and casually shifted his deep brown eyes to the floor.
"Thanks."
A slender magenta finger lifted his chin. Surprised, he was greeted with a calm pair of multicolored butterfly lashed eyes.
"No problem."
A smile. She gave him a smile. A smile that said I've got you. A smile that made his day. A smile.
They studied one another in a peaceful silence until a clearing of a throat interrupted them.
"Come on, Garnet," Steven said, hands on his hips, and a mischievous smirk on his face. The gem turned to him and shot him an accusing look. She knew he'd been listening the entire time.
The little devil.
