I look at the daily announcements and ruffle my eyebrows together. Why do they have to remind us every day of the rules? All I want is to smash the tablet against my bedside table and call it a day, but instead I do as I should. I read the rules.
Daily Rules
-All citizens are to remain quiet outside
-All minors (-16) are to get to school on time
-All adults (+16) are to report to work on time
-All citizens are to recite our motto with the Leaders-All minors (-16) are to say the sign of respect to every adult
-All citizens are to wear their designated clothing outside of their housesThank you for reading, continue on with your daily duties.
~From The LeadersDon't they sound nice?
I quickly slip on my "designated clothing" which consisted of a long pale pink skirt and a white blouse. The Leaders are sexist if you ask me, they males get to wear pants while the females have to wear skirts and dresses. Disgraceful.
My tablet chimed telling me that it was time for me to grab some breakfast. I ignore the alarm off and quickly fix my jet black hair in the mirror. The alarm chimes and once again I ignore it. I wash my face and stare into my blue eyes, "You got this Shelbey, make the most out of this day. You have three days left." The alarm chimes again only, this time the alarm is louder and more obnoxious. I groan, but oblige and I walk down to the kitchen. Only when I walk into the kitchen does the alarm stop.
I grab a bowl of oatmeal which is already on the table ready for me and I sit down with my family. My parents and sister are sitting, their posture straight, robotic. I copy their posture before I eat my breakfast.
Soon, my annoying tablet goes off telling me I had to get to school. I stand up and grab my bag before I throw my empty bowl in the sink so it can clean itself. Like usual, the bowl is sucked under the sink and pops up minutes later cleaned. Quickly I store the bowl in the cupboard before telling my family, "Have a good day, may Irky have mercy."
They mumble back the exact same thing and then I'm off. Once I get outside my tablet quiets and I find myself in the sea of students who are soundlessly making their way to school. I fall into line and I just think to myself till I make it to school.
Once I make it inside a whoosh of sound arrive to my ears. I laugh to myself, they all know the rules, but the moment we're inside it's loud and hectic. A body tried to tackle me and I scream, "Bailey! Don't do that!"
She laughs at my startled expression before she shakes her head disapprovingly at me, her blond hair swaying in her pony-tail. "You forgot to put your hair up in a pony-tail again!" she hisses.
I wince in realization. How do I keep forgetting that important rule in the dress code? Bailey hands me a spare hair elastic she keeps in her bag for cases like this. I quickly put my hair up and let out a breath in relief. "You are so lucky I saved you from Ms.Goldberg!"
I look into her grey stormy eyes and wonder what would have happened if she forgot to bring a hair tie today. "I owe you one," I finally agree as we head to our classroom. Bailey is in her designated clothing, which is the same outfit as me.
Suddenly an arm encircles my waist from behind causing my stomach to do back flips. I smile to myself, "Hey Fallon!" I look up to see his blue eyes staring at me with a mischevious glint in his eyes.
Fallon in his typical style has his blond hair messily spiking everywhere, his baby blue pants wrinkled (he always sleeps in so he has to rush to get ready) and his white button up shirt undone at the top. I try to loosen his grip on my waist to stop the party inside my stomach, but he just smiles at me sweetly.
"Hey babe," he beams as he takes my bag from me. I begin to protest and before I can take my bag back Fallon's best friend, Roman shows up.
Roman walks up to us whistling a random song. "You two lovebirds leave the flirting to a minimum! I can't take that much romance!" He smoothens out his slicked back brown hair and squints his brownish eyes at his tablet. "We are going to be late," he whispers in horror.
All of our eyes widen and we all start walking faster to the classroom. Fortunately for us, we make it on time.
Fallon gives me back my bag and we quickly say goodbye before we head to our seats. I sit beside Bailey on the girl's side of the room and she smirks. "Why are you smirking?" I ask slightly scared of what her answer is to be.
"No reason..." she trails off.
I glare at her suspiciously before I shake my head in defeat. I'll never know what goes through her head.
All of a sudden all the chatter stops and everyone straightens in their seats. That could only mean one thing. Ms.Goldberg has arrived.
Her heels click on the wooden floor of the classroom as she walks to her desk at the front. "I have the list for those who are to Fall in three days," she announces nonchalantly. In this room filled with my fellow classmates virtually no one is born on the same day. So, The Leaders decided instead of having a Fall every day of the year we would have two each year. One in September and one in March. Since we have school all year round they decided to split the year in half, so every six months we have a Fall for the respected age group.
Since no one is allowed to tell anyone if you have your Fall coming up everyone is on the edge of their seat to see who will be Falling with who this term. Ms.Goldberg begins to list off names of people and once I hear Bailey's name I internally squeal, we'll at least be Falling together. She continues and I hear Fallon's name and I crack a smile. She says my name and Bailey hugs me, and once she ends up saying Roman's name Bailey shakes my shoulders in excitement. We'll all be Falling together!
Once Ms.Goldberg finishes the list she beckons us to follow her. Everyone she listed stands up and we all follow her out the door, leaving our bags by our chairs as our usual teacher, Mr.Zanti walks into the class filled with the rest of the students.
Fallon and Roman almost instinctively find Bailey and I and we all walk together. Fallon slips an arm around my waist which causes butterflies to flutter inside my stomach. He pulls me closer to him and I don't try to loosen his grip like I would usually, as the nerves of the event came washing over me. We all follow quietly behind Ms.Goldberg as she leads us her office. Once we are all inside she opens another door which leads to a cold, damp, and dark corridor. At the end of the corridor, a door stands there almost dauntingly as we walk slowly towards it.
"Welcome to the next step of your little lives," is all Ms.Goldberg says before she opens the looming door.
