Chapter Four

I drift in and out of consciousness and every now and then I receive little snip bits of conversations. My name would be whispered, or just a conversation which made no sense for me- as I had no background information on the topic. My memory slowly would give me little flashbacks, but never enough to make sense of what had happened. It is truly infuriating... On top of all that I couldn't move my body at all, it felt almost as if my immobile state is the barrier that is protecting me from my memories. All I could do is endure the flashbacks and just float in and out of the black abyss that is my mind.

For what feels like the thousandths time I became aware of my surroundings and was set free from my quarantine inside my own mind. Except this time was different, this time, I could feel my body itself. My hands and feet began to tingle and soon I could move them. I relished in this feeling as I began to be able to move my arms, legs, torso, and then my head. To top it off no voices were talking, I was in a blanket of silence. And silence is the last thing I want. I command my eyelids to open and to my luck, they flutter open.

I peer around and to my utter horror I am not home or even in a hospital- I'm in The Chambers. The cold, damp cot supports my body in the right-hand corner of the cell. The singular steel barred window above my head lets a tiny bit of light in. My hand touched the stone walls as I try and sit up and I hiss when the rough, freezing stone comes into contact with my warm hand. The floor appears to be dirt and it slowly turns to mud when it reaches the other side of the room. How generous of them.

The Chambers is a place where they store the outlaws of Tatheu go until The Leaders determine their punishment. That would've left me some hope if I didn't know that this one cell -the worst living arrangements of all the cells- are reserved for those who will be sent out into The Beyond. The ultimate punishment. No one ever survives in The Beyond. You either starve to death, freeze to death, attacked by another Society, or you just drop off the face of Earth. The Leaders track you when you are released and when you die your tracker (which is a dot on a map in The Leaders office according to school) turns from green to red. But, there are some dots that just blink off the map. Never to be seen again. My brother Vlayd was the first one to disappear completely on the map. But, soon others started to disappear too.

All of a sudden a flash of memory washes over me and before I know it my knees are huddled to my chest and my sobs are bouncing off the four walls. Fallon. I killed him. That's when I had an epiphany.

They must think I set this up! That I knew before hand that the tower was going to collapse. Okay, maybe I did know- but I tried so hard to save everyone! It was just Fallon being his own idiotic self that made me grab the column instead of him.  He was always too concerned for his own good. Fate can go and cry in a damn corner because I am so done being a chess piece of their game. I mean, did they have to show me death? Show me what would happen and then let Fallon die anyways? I'm just done. Why me?

All of a sudden a pounding of footsteps sound outside my small cell. The door creaks open and outside my cell stands a man in a black uniform. Ah, my own executioner. Perfect.

The man walks into my cell and says, "Hands in front of you Ms. Shelbey." Here I am going to the Trial to see what my fate it. I restrict my eyes from rolling and I put them in front of me. He takes a pair of regulation handcuffs and snaps them onto place on my wrists. Using the handcuffs, he hauls me to a standing position and drags me out of the metal door which I totally overlooked when I was observing the cell a few minutes ago. The handcuffs cut into my wrists as he continues to drag me, it isn't until we walk past a slightly rusted metal helmet that I pull back. On the left side of my neck is an eye. My marking. My future.

I swear loudly and ask, "What is on my neck?" The guard freezes and then takes my neck and tilts it to see my neck. He gasps before sinking onto one knee.

Just imagine it's on her neck.

"The prophecy is true. It's coming true. But The Leaders said- it doesn't matter what they said now." he babbles and he quickly stands up and unlocks my handcuffs, leaving my red irritated skin some time to rest. "Don't kill me please! I was just doing my job. I had no idea it was you- or even that you were real. I just-"

"Wait, what?" I ask him affectivly cutting him off from his freak out.

"You don't know?" he asks with his eyes wide.

I scoff and ask, "Would I be asking if I knew?"

Idiot. Hurry up and explain- we have places we need to be. A voice in my head sounds. I silently agree with the voice. I am about to go and be executed, I need to go and try and talk my way out fo this.

"Remember The Prophecy?" he asks me as he walks at a much slower pace. I walk a little behind him as my mind recalls The Prophecy.

Our Goddess once came down from the sky itself,

She had great intentions, and created us without any need fro mention.

We paid her back by worship and in our blood it became seared,

But when the clock struck twelve on the twelfth day of the twelfth month the belief disappeared.

Irky suffered greatly and retreated to the sky, in a den somwhere up very high.

She assigned us roles and took away our choice, we were left with such little voice.

So, when she announced she'd descend once again, that humanity would be givin another chance, we would become enhanced.

When that day arrives, and she comes back into our lives.

We must always remember that she will judge us, and we must follow her without a fuss.

For the life we now live, can be gone if we give.

Hopfully we the life will have past, or the Sun will not last.

My mouth dropped and I chocked on air, "You mean I'm-"

"Yes."

"But I can't be-"

"You are."

"Damn."

Boom. I am defintly liking this version much better than the other one.

Anyways, I will not have an updating scehdule and I will update when I feel like it. Please don't pity me. I just am done after eight hours of school and then another two hours of homework like everyday.

So then I really just want to sit down and read.

So no updating schedule until school lightens up. But, I will try and update every week somehow! It will be like a surprise! You'll be doing your normal stuff and all of a sudden BOOM. UPDATE.

Okay, I'm done.

Until next chapter,
~Ny
