A reason I loved going to the library was that Ms. Davis, our wacky English teacher, moonlighted as a librarian during lunch.
She was never officially named assistant librarian, but we students dubbed her that because she spent her free time stalking the shelves and chatting up students about the latest editions added or asking for some suggestions on what to order.
"Smackle! I love those boots you have there!" Davis greets, flashing me her signature welcome smile. She places the armful of books she had onto the desk beside her.
I smile back, "Thank you, Ms. D! I bought them this past weekend."
"Well they're very pretty." She studies my face, probably wondering if I was okay.
"Ms. D, I'm okay. I swear." I assure her after a minute of silence. I shift from what foot to the other, nervous under her scrutiny.
"I feel that you have gotten distant, is all. I hope everything is alright." She pats my arm. "Now what were you here for before I rudely interrupted your journey?"
I laugh softly, in love with her aura. "I was actually looking for Maya. She needs some rescuing from the 3rd wheel life."
"HEY WE'RE NOT THAT BAD!"
I whip around and see Riley and Lucas with frowns on their faces. Maya waves from behind the couple.
"Well, there are your friends. I guess I gotta skedaddle! See you next class!" Davis gathers up the stack of books and walks away.
I open my arms wide, "MAYA, MY LOVE! I AM SORRY FOR TAKING LONG."
Maya runs into my embrace and sobs dramatically into my shoulder. "They were horrible! Absolutely horrible!"
Lucas rolls his eyes, "She exaggerates. All we did was kiss."
"Yeah, about hundred times!" Maya snaps his way. Riley lets Lucas go and comes to complete our trio hug.
I murmur softly, "I missed you guys."
"We missed you too." Riley coos. Maya nods and we stay in that position for a good four minutes.
Lucas clears his throat, causing us to pull apart.
"Okay so let's go get a room again and talk about this party!" Riley gushes, pulling us to the nearest group rooms.
I laugh, "Lucas, too?"
"We need him to answer some questions." Maya nods to me.
"About what?" I ask.
Lucas snickers, "They want some dirt on your Troy toy."
*
According to Lucas, Troy was a good guy. He was the athletic type, but didn't sit with him or the other jocks. Troy was the quiet type, stuck to his own path and his own friends. When I asked who were his friends, Lucas couldn't answer.
This just made me like Troy even more since no one in this tight little group of ours seemed to know anything about the guy. It was exciting to watch Riley and Maya scour their brains for anything they may have heard about him.
"He is a wild card!" Maya exclaims, interrupting Riley's soliloquy of um's. Lucas looks relieved, probably wondering when he can steal his girl away and make out some more.
I smile, "That's perfect then. I mean, it would be nice to know exactly what I'm working with here, but so far he's been such a great time."
"A great time, huh?"
I freeze. This was not the person I needed to see today. Not when it has been a good day so far.
"Farkle! What's up?" Lucas greets, holding out his hand for a high-five. I wince at the mentioned name and turn around slowly.
