I've always been a really good band student, despite our slightly intimidating teacher: Mr. Smith. He makes jokes that everyone laughs at, and he also sings for student's birthdays, but he can be mean. He yells a lot when he's upset, and calls us weird names.
So I was in band class. I hadn't been having the best day. Language arts was boring, and my enemy sat right next to me (he threw a water bottle at me). Over the weekend, my friend Thalia and I had a small fight, but luckily, everything's fine now. I was still in kind of a bad mood, though.
I had just gotten seated with my baritone when the only bass clarinet player in our band walked in. I don't mean to judge him in any way, but he's the kind of kid who talks to himself and makes the weirdest comments. He's a bit chubby, and I think he has a crush on me. His name was David.
"Can I have your chair, Allison?" David asks me.
I shake my head, already situated. "No, sorry. Get your own, I just sat down."
David gives me a mean look. "There's no space, Allison. Move your chair."
I give him a mean look back. "No, David. First come, first served. That's the way it is. Sorry."
David sighs and walks away. I've almost forgotten about this when Mr. Smith goes up to the class.
His eyes focus on David. "Why aren't you sitting?"
David shrugs. "There's no room between the saxophones and the baritones."
"Who said no?" Mr. Smith asks.
At this moment, I know there's going to be trouble. Instantly, I start having a mental freak-out moment. I stare at David with a pleading look in my eyes that I hope says, please don't say my name!
"It was one of the baritones." David says, his eyes gazing at all 5 of us. Mr. Smith nods for him to go on. I look nervously at my friend Lea. She looks back.
Mr. Smith is a strict teacher, and I'm sure if David says my name, I'll get a detention.
"I think it was Allison."
Instantly, a murmur goes around the room as I panic. All 75 heads in the band class turn to me, except a select few who are gossiping with their friends about, guess who? Me.
"She said first come, first served." David blabs on, in front of everyone. My face burns.
Mr. Smith stares right at me, and I can practically hear the surprise in his voice. "Allison, come see me after class."
Inside, I'm freaking out. But I don't want anyone to know, so I turn my head to Mr. Smith. "Alright."
Throughout the entire band class, I'm distracted. I'm not playing as well as I should be, and I'm dreading the end of class. When the packing alarm goes off, I nearly faint.
"Come here, Allison." Mr. Smith calls from his office. I take a deep breath and walk to his office door, my baritone still in my hands.
"Come on in." Mr. Smith says calmly. I brace myself for him to scream at me and give me a morning detention, or a lunch detention. I've only gotten detention twice in middle school, and for stupid reasons. But I step in Mr. Smith's office.
"What made you say that?" Mr. Smith asks me. For a split second, I consider lying and telling him I didn't say that. But I'm a terrible liar. Lying's wrong, and what if he has cameras in his room and he checks the footage? So I take a deep breath and start talking.
"Well," I start, surprised and humiliated my my shaking voice and hands. "I, um, he asked a little bit rudely." I let out a nervous laugh. "But I know that's not an excuse." My stomach twists and turns.
Mr. Smith smiles a little. "Calm down. I'm not yelling at you."
I smile a little and feel my face turning as red as a tomato. I've never been in trouble with Mr. Smith, ever. And it's my third year of band.
"If he was being disrespectful at all, you need to come talk to me about it." Mr. Smith says, talking in a normal voice. I almost ask him who he is and what he's done to the real Mr. Smith!
"Okay." I say, waiting for him to continue.
"Just try to be nicer. I know David's usually late, but just save a spot for him between you and Kate." Mr. Smith tells me. Kate's the saxophone player that sits next to David on the other side. I nod as the bell rings. The bell that means you should be in fourth period.
"I'll write you a pass." Mr. Smith says, noticing my expression change. I nod and smile at him. "Go pack up, Allison."
I step out of Mr. Smith's office and put my baritone away.
IN FIFTH PERIOD
"You ready for the test?" Caitlyn asks me. I shrug nervously and smile. "Oh, by the way, did you really say that to David?"
Before I can reply, another one of my enemies, Cameron, comes into the classroom. He smirks at me. "First come, first served?"
"I didn't say it!" I lie.
Cameron laughs. "Sure you didn't."
I roll my eyes and wait for my history teacher (Mrs. Kelley) to pass out the tests.
