"So Paige how are you? How is it not going to school? Are you gonna come back to Haughton?" Char bombards me with a million questions while Alic swims laps around both of us and we just float. "That's a lot of questions give me a minute." I say and dive under water swim around her pool for a minute and then pop back up. "Okay no I am not gonna come back to Haughton most likely. Not going to school was whatever. And I'm here so I guess alright." I respond and Alic moves closer leaning on the left side of me which I find weird because it is the farther away from Charlotte. "You went to Haughton? I never saw you?" Alic says and my heart drops hearing that thick country draw. "You talk like you're from Bethany not Haughton just saying and I dropped before you transferred probably." I saw avoiding eye contact. We bull shit around for a bit and then it's time to go. Alic helps me take the laundry baskets out to the car. "So you dropped out?" He asks me and my heart drops when I hear his voice. "Yup." I say trying to sound as disinterested as possible and in the process my phone falls out of my pocket. He bends down but instead of handing it back to me instantly he puts his own number into my phone. "Here now you have my number and I texted my phone so I have yours. We should hang out sometime, you seem really cool." He says and I know I look dumbfounded. What just happened? I'm about to ask him when Char comes out. "Hey Paigey can you and your momma take Alic home my mom just passed Brookshire's and she doesn't know Alic was over." She says as my mom is walking outside. "Of course get in the car guys let's go Brookshire's is not that far away." My mom says then Char hugs me, my mom and kisses Alic and he honestly looks disgusted. We all get in the car and my mom pulls of her driveway and on highway 80 going towards town. "Alic where do you live darling?" My mom asks. "Honestly ma'am you can just drop me off here I live in the trailer park right across from Charlotte's neighborhood." He says looking at me through my mirror which is down so I can comb my hair and put it up. I smile at him just to be spiteful. "Oh no I'll turn around up here at take you home. I do not want you walking on 80 even if it is just a few blocks." My mom says being nice to him which makes me roll my eyes.
