**The Artist POV**

While I'm relieved to have shared my latest flashback with Lani, my mind still seems rather unsettled. Lani seems to sense my frustration, and does her best to keep me occupied.

"Let's go inside and see what we can find for dinner," she suggests, with a skeptical look on her face.

"I can tell what that look means, mama," I reply with a smile before offering as an afterthought, "Maybe we should just go out tonight."

"Other than that diner, there really doesn't seem to be anything out here..." she offers with a look of annoyance, clearly remembering our last experience there. Maybe suggesting that wasn't such a good idea...

I'm pulled back out of my thoughts as she continues with a mischievous twinkle in her eye, "Besides, I have something else in mind for tonight..." Wonder what little mama's got up her sleeve...

"Really mama...now what could that be?" I retort playfully, a curious look on my face.

"Oh you'll see..." she continues, a devilish twinkle in her eye. Okay...now I'm intrigued...

**A few hours later**

In the end, we settled for a quick dinner of vegetarian chili, cheese, and crackers.

While Lani was occupied pulling dinner together, I restlessly started looking through all the nooks and crannies of the cabin, determined to find something to occupy us for the evening.

For what seemed like the longest time, I came up empty handed. Other than the Monopoly game Lani found under the bed, all my eyes seemed to lay eyes on were some cobwebs and a few dust bunnies.

"Dinner's ready," I hear her call from the kitchen.

As I make my way over to help her move everything to our small dining table, my foot catches on a break in the floor that up until now had somehow gone unnoticed. What the hell?!

"Are you okay?" Lani asks with a look of concern, noticing my slight stumble.

"Yeah...I'm fine, mama." I respond, my eyes downcast making contact with what looks to be a hidden trap door. "But what the hell is this?" I ask pointing. Now this is interesting...

"I have no idea, but let's check it out after we eat. Come on, before it gets cold," she tosses back, hands full with carrying everything over to the table.

I give the door one last curious look, before hurrying over to the table to join her.

__

Our after dinner clean up complete, Lani and I find ourselves on the floor with a variety of tools, trying everything we can think of to open up the trap door. So far our efforts have been unsuccessful...and we're almost out of ideas.
