**Iolani POV**

As my eyes lock with smirking, inquisitive Lo I start to panic.  Come on, Lani!  Think of something!  You can do it!

“I’m waiting…” Lo continues playfully taunting, a look of determination on her face. I don’t really want to talk about it...not today, and certainly not with her.  I’ve got it!

Without a word I start rifling through the overfilled bag wrapped around my right wrist, holding back the secret grin that’s just begging to show on my face when to my utmost surprise I feel and hear her girly smack make contact with my bare arm.  “Ouch!  That hurt!” I reply, rubbing my arm as my eyes meet her disapproving scolding ones.

“I said, no peeking!”  Aloha jibes back, wagging her finger in my face like I’m some defiant child.  While her attention was diverted, I slink into the apartment with her right behind me, as I unobtrusively slide the envelope carefully from her hand right into my purse for safekeeping.  Mission accomplished.  Now it’s just a matter of saving this for later….

Partially to continue with the charade, and partly my own curiosity bleeding through, I look over my shoulder to meet her eyes with suspicion.  I shuffle the entire bouquet into my hands, teddy bear and all and take a heady breath in to catch the heavy floral scent before asking suspiciously.  “What the hell, Lo?!  What’s the big deal?” They smell just like heaven...

In keeping with the air of mystery cloaking her ever since we arrived at the grocery store, her eyes evade mine with a veiled smile.  She gives me her best attempt at puppy dog eyes, grabbing the bags still clutched inside my grip as she makes her way toward the kitchen.  “Please just trust me, Lani,” she pleads.  “You’ll like it, I promise….”  If you say so, girl...if you say so…

I give her a brief curt nod before turning to head toward my e ipo’s room, stopping briefly to display the flowers in the front entry...right next to where I catch Molly Jr. happily fluttering away in her bowl before escaping into his sanctuary to slide his message into the bedside table for my perusal later.  What message have you left me, honey?  Should I read it now or wait until later?  What to do?

My hands itch with anticipation...so much so that I’m just about to give into temptation and tear into the envelope when I hear Lo’s voice call out to me from the kitchen as she rifles through my cupboards.  “Lani!  Where do you keep the garlic?!”  Eep…

__

Considering just a few months ago she couldn’t cook a thing, the fact that she hasn’t burned my place down yet is amazing in and of itself.

That my apartment is riddled with a cacophony of smells I remember from my youth is nothing short of a miracle.

Watching her navigate her way across my kitchen with ease from the comfort of my living room, as she nervously babbles about nothing though...is starting to put me on edge.
