-Bernadette’s Time-

“When I look at it, I’m gonna stare at it but too long because it might melt. Then, I’ll get my spoon… take a huge bite… close my eyes in bliss… and forget about the world. Here I come, my Double Dutch!”

Okay, I’m practically skipping. My companion on the other hand is practically dragging his feet.

“Slow down, Bernadette. That Double Dutch won’t go anywhere.”

“Hurry up, Caleb! My taste buds and I can’t wait to be reunited with our beloved ice cream!”

Yep, I won our little bet and I got a 90 in my math exam! Ice cream is a great motivation, I tell you. And now on this oh so beautiful and sweet Friday afternoon after our classes, I dragged Caleb to buy my gallon of Double Dutch. The mere thought of it makes my mouth water. I asked my parents’ permission about it, and they said it’s okay as long as I’m with Caleb. Seriously, what did he do to make my parents trust him so much?

We entered the 7/11 store and I rushed to their refrigerator where the ice cream is located. I let out a small shriek when I found my Double Dutch in all its delicious glory. I picked it up and rushed to the cashier.

“He’ll pay,” I said, pointing at Caleb busy getting a cup of Slurpee.

“Aw. You’re boyfriend’s sweet,” the lady handling the cashier said. My eyes popped out at her statement and I waved my hands in front of me in disagreement.

“Oh no, he’s just a friend. I won our little bet and he’s treating me to ice cream.”

“Oh I’m sorry. It’s just that when you two entered, you looked good together. And I saw the way he looks at you.”

To my disappointment I found myself blushing. Caleb paid for the gallon of ice cream and his Slurpee. He also bought two bottles of water for us to drink to cancel out the sweetness of our orders. I decided to disregard what the cashier lady said and focus on my ice cream. We sat beside each other at the long table placed near the window. I opened the said gallon, took a bit and then… pure bliss! This is happiness!

“Are you sure you can eat all that?” Caleb asked me skeptically. I just glared at him.

“Are you questioning my love for ice cream?”

He laughed and then took a sip of his drink. “You’ll get a brain freeze later.”

“Nuh uh. I never get brain freeze.”

“Ever?”

“Yep. That’s why I love my ice cream.”

I took another bite of Double Dutch and my eyes closed in contentment. Nothing feels good than ice cream after a long day. I took bite after bite, not minding the rest of the world. Halfway through my ice cream, I found Caleb looking at me, a small smile on his face.
