I never expected a middle-aged woman to be running wildly in the forest, dragging a maniac along with her.
But I - skeptically - still ran with her.
I had my doubts, my qualms, but I had nothing to lose. I asked her, "Are we escaping?" She doesn't answer. She picks up speed. It doesn't seem like we're running in a straight line; it feels like we were avoiding some obstacles along the way, or that she was trying to decieve the eyes of the men who were hunting for me.
We repeated the same moves for over ten minutes.
I was choking, my lungs screaming for air, my legs unsteady, they wobbled, and finally I gave out, falling to the ground. The woman didn't force me or tug me to get up. She squat by me, and I stared into her eyes, searching. Her eyes were light brown. And now that I looked closely, her hair was blonde, but with streaks of brown in between.
What suprised me the most is, that she was staring at me, too. Not only staring. Her eyes were bloodshot, and soon, a big, fat tear rolled down her cheeks, touched her lips. She didn't bother to wipe them away. Then, following the that, more drops of tears streamed down her face. She sobbed and sobbed and sobbed.
I sat there, dumbfounded, astonished.
Then she managed to choke out a word between her sobs. "Sorry!" She shrieks, then a fist to her chest. "Sorry! Sorry! Sorry! Sorry! Sorry!" She fell to the floor, a mess.
And for all these years, I thought I was the only one who suffered, I thought only I was the one who deserved sorrow. I felt melancholy filling up within me. I stare at this woman cry like she's mourning for someone. And I realize, I'm sitting here, watching her. Helpless.
I recalled Anna's reason for her to help me.
When you see the chance to save someone, help someone, you take it, or the guilt will stick with you for the rest of your life.
Comforting, helping this broken woman might not be the hardest thing for me to do. But still, I hesitated.
If I'm already this impotent, then what would Ross, Anna, Wesley and all those Creators feel at first, handling a powerful yet powerless girl in the first place?
