A loud clap of thunder rolled across the sky, shaking the foundation of your apartment. It sent shivers down your spine. You had heard on the news that a severe thunderstorm was heading your way. But you hadn't been expecting it to be so soon. Your boyfriend was away on business, you'd known that he'd call you soon but you wouldn't take any chances answering. You were in the kitchen fixing a snack when the power went out. You immediately abandoned the sandwich to seek shelter, forgetting everything Ren had told you to do in case of a storm you frantically searched your closet for a sheet.
Once you found one, you draped it over your head and crawled under the coffee table. The house phone began to ring but of course you'd ignored it. The ringing had stopped and you heard a beep, letting you know that the caller was leaving you a voicemail.
"Hey there, _______. It's really pouring down where I am and judging by all of the missed calls to your cell it must be there too. I've asked the photographer to let me finish the shoot tomorrow so that I could get home to you. I'll be there soon. But until I do, I left a pair of ear plugs in the coffee table drawer. If you didn't take to the bed, there's is a sheet in the hallway closet. Use that to cover yourself until I get home. I'm sure it'll get pretty chilly inside without the heat on. I love you, honey. Everything will be just fine. I promise."
You blinked away the sting of your tears rising, even with him being so far away, he was still so attentive. He'd known how hard it was for you during storms and he'd always gone to extreme lengths to make sure you were comforted through it all no matter where you both were. You rummaged through the drawers to find the ear plugs and immediately put them in.
You could no longer hear the harsh crackling sound of thunder but you could still see the room illuminate by the lightning. You squeezed your eyes tightly, nibbling at your lip so hard you were sure it'd start bleeding soon. Soon, you found yourself drifting away....
When you opened your eyes again, you were greeting by loving smile. Ren had shut all of the blinds and closed the curtains so that the only light you saw was from the candles surrounding the living room. You rubbed your eyes sleepily, you didn't feel sleepy at all before you had hidden under the table.
You realized, you both were on the couch and your head was resting on his chest. You reached to remove one of the ear buds, but he stopped you. He kissed your forehead gently as if to say it's alright. You felt one of his fingers rubbing small circles over your back and the other hand massaged your scalp.
Although you couldn't hear a word, you smiled.
"I love you, Ren."
Only then did he removed an ear plug, "I love you more, my lady. Now please, relax. We will stay here until the storm slackens." he said before replacing the plug.
You did just that. Just being in his arms made you feel at ease. It made you feel less frightened. Because you'd known that he would protect you through it all. You felt tears rolling down you cheek, crossing the bridge of your nose over to the other cheek to fall onto his shirt. This time they weren't tears of fear. They were tears of joy.
