When the bell rang, Lapis stood up too quickly, knocking over her binder and all of its contents and causing the whole class to erupt in laughter. She sighed and bent down to pick them up, while her classmates stepped around her, not bothering to help. Lapis gathered up all her papers and hastily shoved them into her binder. Her mom had promised she would be there to pick her up today, since it was raining. She glanced around to see if she had forgotten anything when she spotted a piece of sketchbook paper a few feet away. It was one of her drawings, a sketch of her flying through the air with wings made of water that sprouted out of a tear drop shaped gem just between her shoulder blades. 'Water Witch' it read in loopy cursive. It had taken her two whole months to draw, and she still wasn't completely finished. Lapis crawled over to pick up the drawing, but before she could reach it, somebody else grabbed it. A large, meaty hand closed around the drawing, making wrinkles in the paper. Lapis's breath caught in her throat. Jasper. "Look what we have here," the brutish girl said loudly, holding up the drawing. The few kids that hadn't left yet turned around to look. Everybody knew that if Jasper was saying something, you'd better listen. Lapis felt panic bubble up in her chest as she realized the teacher had already left the room. There was nobody to protect her now. The tall girl read the words written on the paper. "Looks like we got a Water Witch on our hands, everyone," she sneered, causing the class to laugh. Lapis shakily got up off the floor. She had to get the drawing back. She reached up to grab it, but Jasper held the now wrinkled paper high above her head. "Why don't you fly up and get it, Water Bitch." Lapis clenched her fist. "Give it back," she said, trying to keep her voice calm. Jasper raised her caterpillar eyebrows in surprise. "Oh! It speaks!" She grinned cruelly, earning another laugh from the students watching. "What was that? You're gonna have to speak up." Lapis could feel her face warm up. Hot tears started to form in the corners of her eyes. In that moment, all the anger she'd felt over the years just exploded out of her. "I said...GIVE IT BACK," she growled, swinging her tightly clenched fist through the air. It made contact with Jasper's oddly shaped nose and a sickening crack filled the room as Jasper fell to the floor with a thud. The girl held her nose, but that didn't stop the blood from seeping through her fingers. Lapis's stomach gurgled uncomfortably. "You really are a freak girl," Jasper snarled from behind her hands. "N-no I..." Lapis mumbled, her breathing starting to become ragged. I didn't mean to. She was crying now, tears streaking down her face. She needed to get away, away from Jasper, away from the group of kids that were looking at her like she was the monster. Lapis snatched the drawing off of the ground and ran to the only place she knew she would be safe. She ran to the swings.
