It was Manaka's thirteenth birthday, and they decided that it was a special enough occasion to go out on land and buy something.

Money was hard to come by in the sea, for they used a different form of payment, but somehow they managed to scrape up enough to buy a bracelet, or maybe a necklace.

So they walked to the marketplace, a nice place with stalls lining the circular walls of the area. The places circled around each other, with four perpendicular walkways. Manaka and Hikari darted from stall to stall, Chisaki chasing after them, and Kaname leisurely walking behind.

"Isn't this so cute, Manaka-chan?" Manaka shook her head no after taking a quick look. The bracelet was pretty, and Manaka wasn't picky, but she wanted to keep looking to see what would be 'just right'.

"Hey, this is cool!" Hiker picked up a demon mask, scaring Manaka.

"Boooooooooo!" Kaname wore a matching mask, and even Manaka laughed at the two-some.

They put it down and kept walking, much to the shop-keeper's relief.

"Have we been here yet?" asked Chisaki.

"There's still a million stalls left, Chii-chan." Manaka smiled.

"It's like we're going in circles." Joked Kaname.

"Well, duh." Said Hikari, and the others doubted that he got the joke.

Either way, Kaname noted, he was too busy staring at Manaka to figure out anything at that moment.

"Hey, how about this?" Chisaki picked up a shining necklace of pearls, but Manaka just shook her head again. Manaka had been doing this for hours, and everyone was a little tired.

"I want something really special, Chii-chan." Manaka pouted, and kept walking.

"Hey!" A voice said, close by. Chisaki and Manaka turned around, but this time it wasn't their friends.

"You're merfolk, aren't you?" a shopkeeper smiled. The eyepatch on his face signaled mysteriousness, but the spark in his eyes drew people closer. They could already see shoppers drifting towards his wares, though none of them seemed to do more than trade gossip.

"How did you know?" Manaka was the first one to speak, which surprised all of them.

"You run like a seasoned swimmer. " They weren't sure if that was a compliment or a put-down, but the shopkeeper spoke again.

"If you were a regular shopkeeper, i'd sell ya pearls found in the bottom of the ocean. But ya probably have a hundred, don't ya?" The shopkeeper leaned forward in his seat.

"So i'll sell ya this stuff. " He pulled out a box of trinkets and jewelry.

"Don't worry, I haven't overpriced. Too much." he nodded, pleased with himself, and Manaka sorted through the box, clearly enraptured.

"Oh!" Manaka pulled out a bracelet with earthy, flower-shaped beads. They were made of some sort of clay, but it was a type they had seen, though very rarely, in the Shiioshishio shops.

"Do you like it? It was imported from the kingdom next door. A hard find for someone without eyes as large as those." He chuckled.

"How much?" Hikari asked. It looked like he enjoyed the bracelet too, and the shopkeeper held up a hand.

"Fourteen silver ones, no more." He smiled.

"What????????" Manaka said, clenching the beads even more tightly.

"Thirteen, then. I won't go less, ya know. I bought em for eleven so yer getting a steal, my friends."

Chisaki pulled out the purse. It was getting dark, and she rushed, almost dropping a coin or two.

"Umm... we have twelve... and forty-five." Chisaki softly broke it to Manaka and she braced for impact.

"I-it's okay, i'll find some thing better." Manaka sniffled, reaching into the box, but jerked it out when she heard another voice.

"Excuse me." On the left now stood a black-haired person in a cape, and it looked like he was the same age as the traveling merfolk.

"Tsurukh, my boy! What brings you here tonight? Did ya finally decide you wanted a trinket?"

"No, Grandpa sent me for devices. He said it'd help in the cold." Obviously he knew what he was talking about, even if the merfolk were confused. Chisaki squinted at the boy. With the quickly ascending darkness, she couldn't make out much of his features, but he seemed familiar for some reason.

"Here. Tell yar grandpa i'm happy to help." The shopkeeper pulled out another box, this one tightly sealed. The boy in the cloak deposited his coins on the table, the gold still visible.

Quickly, the shopkeeper counted the money.

"Huh. Seems he payed fifty-five extra." The shopkeeper looked over at the waiting sea folk.

"I would give him a refund next time, but it seems that it wasn't an accident. Take the bracelet for the twelve and forty-five."

"Thank you!" Chisaki bowed and took the bracelet out of the box.

Manaka held the bracelet gingerly, and stared to the left where 'Tsurukh' had left. "Thank you..." she murmured, smiling.

Hikari and Chisaki frowned, however.

They left the circular shops satisfied.
