*Note: as of 11/4/25, I'm rewriting and reorganizing this story. After this chapter, things are a bit out of order, so for any newcomers, sorry in advance. It's been so long!*
⌠ 1 ⌡
Akiyama acts like she doesn't see me,
looking the other way on purpose.
I do the same.
After a while, she stomps over to me,
slamming her book down.
People stare at the sound.
Her face burns red.
"Idiot. Making a girl come say hi!"
"Oh? Fancy meeting you here."
"Boys are so clueless."
I can't help but burst out in laughter.
I see her lips tremble against the urge to smile,
trying to stay angry at me.
"Hey, Akiyama."
"Yes, Sakai."
"You know, the weather's great today."
"It really is."
"It's not supposed to rain for another week, you know?"
"So what?"
I put my novel face down on the table.
"How come you're here?"
She gives me a menacing frown,
her nose scrunches up.
That killer look, again.
Maybe I should quit teasing her...
Or maybe not.
"Do you really need me to say it?"
"Don't you know? Boys are clueless."
"They really are! Listen, there's this one dumb guy I met in the library..."
"So that's how it's going to be, huh?"
Akiyama crosses her arms and sits down beside me.
Carefully.
Leaning against the table.
"Sakai, you're such a tease."
"It's just fun messing with you. Sorry, okay?"
"Buy me a coffee if you're really sorry."
"Do I look rich to you?!"
She's still frowning
but
I see the smile
in her eyes.
⌠ 2 ⌡
In this moment,
I can't think of anything else.
Rain girl sits next to me,
mulling over her book.
Her dark hair drips over her shoulders
and rests neatly against her back.
Her eyelashes are delicate and long.
Fluttering every time she blinks.
Every so often, she taps her slim fingers
against the table.
Tap tap tap.
Everything is so different.
⌠ 3 ⌡
Before,
it was almost as if she was a reflection,
dancing in the raindrops.
You could chase and chase and never reach her.
How, then
is she here now,
next to me?
Those notes of faint strawberry
are proof enough,
if nothing else.
⌠ 4 ⌡
The air around us sings.
Our conversation,
like clouds.
Floating around-- going nowhere.
But endlessly stretching across the sky.
Wasn't it the same
with those other girls?
The same words,
the same looks,
the same atmosphere.
No.
This time it's different.
Because it's rain girl.
We talk like long lost childhood friends.
We smile a bit too much.
We give playful glances at each other.
Who knew that a few words
could change a relationship so quickly?
We were strangers just a few days ago.
Something warm is growing in my chest.
Something I've never felt.
The girl in front of me talks cheerfully,
her expressions feel so full and real.
That mirage is gone.
She isn't just rain girl anymore.
She is Akiyama Yura.
