“Mr. Park! What – what are you doing here?”
The girls of room 104 looked up to the door where one of their teachers stood in the doorway, also known as June’s dad.
“Dad?” June got up from her bed. “What are you doing here?”
“I only just heard what happened with you and Joshua,” he explained.
Max opened the door wider, uncertain if she should let her teacher in against the fact that no boys were allowed in their dorm.
Seeing this conflict, June quickly joined her dad out in the corridor with the door shutting behind her.
“Are you alright? Are you hurt?”
“Shouldn’t you be asking Josh the same thing?” she replied dryly as he checked her hands quickly.
“Well I – he’s a big boy. He can take care of himself.” His lips twisted into a frown. “But your power . . . wow. From what I’ve heard, you’re a lot more powerful than I imagined.” He beamed. “It’s incredible. My daughter with one of the biggest potentials in this school!”
“Dad, it’s not exactly that great,” June said though with less a less chastising tone.
Since her run-in with Josh a couple days ago, June was slowly accepting the fact that what she’d done hadn’t exactly been such a big deal after all.
“It was self-defence, that’s all,” she told him. “And he’s perfectly fine.”
“Of course he is,” her dad responded quickly. “But with powers like yours, sometimes they backfire on the person they belong to. Are you alright?”
“I’m fine,” she reassured him, letting him inspect her arms.
It was weird having her dad fuss over her like this when June was so used to it being her mum instead.
“Good,” he sighed in relief. “Your mother would have a fit if she found out what happened.” He chuckled. “What I’d give to see you in the middle of that food fight.”
“Max said food fights happen often.” June pursed her lips. “That’s not exactly very good for the school, is it?”
“It took a lot of convincing but the staff and I believe it’s a healthy way for the students to occasionally vent out any stress with having to deal with their powers.” Mr. Park gave another chortle with a mischievous gleam in his eyes. “But really, it’s just a good way for us to monitor how the students do in freestyle combat. It’s a good exercise for them and it helps us keep track of their progress.”
June frowned. “You make it sound like we’re all lab rats.”
“No, no,” he said quickly. “But the parents do pay for the school to help keep their children and their powers in check, you know.”
“And combat?” June’s frown deepened further. “It sounds like you train everybody here for war.”
“A war?” Mr. Park laughed, albeit somewhat oddly. “Of course not. You’re all just children. But we can’t exactly guarantee that out in the real world, other people with powers like us won’t attack them. It’s just a basic course for self-defence.”
“Oh, right. That’s useful then.” Hearing it directly from her dad as relieving and reassuring at the same time.
And it seemed that the more she knew and heard about Evergreen, the more she was slowly accepting it.
“So are classes as weird as the people here or are they like normal human stuff?”
The whole reason June had come to Evergreen was to learn to control her powers. Surely she wasn’t going to be deprived of basic education while she was at it, would she?
