June had to admit, it was extremely pathetic of her to find her way back to her dorm room to hide out until lunch time. The possibility that Max, the only real person she knew, would turn up was what had driven her back, added with the fact that it appeared to be much safer indoors in the confines of the dormitory rather than out in the open with the high school freaks.

Though considering what June could unintentionally do, she wasn’t much to talk.

So June had curled up on her bed with her phone, scrolling through the hundreds of text messages from Erica, spamming her about the new school.

Any hot guys? xx please tell me you found a hundred

What’s it like? Posh, snobby peeps?

Come ooooon, wai u no reply :(

June couldn’t help but laugh at the last one and quickly texted back a reply.

The door to the room opened a couple minutes later. In came June’s other roommate, the one she hadn’t been expecting to see until retiring to the room after dinner, whenever that would be.

“Oh. Right. I keep forgetting I won’t have this place to myself.”

“What about Max?”

“She’s practically out most of the day trying to figure out how her invisibility works.” Danni shrugged then threw herself onto the bed which was presumably hers. “If you ask me, I think she’s trying too hard.”

“And what’s your ability?” June questioned, eyeing the girl with a frown.

“Look closer.” Danni rolled over onto her side, pushing a hand through her black hair.

Hang on. Black hair. Wasn’t she blonde just half an hour ago?

“Your hair –”

“It’s not the only thing I can change.”

Danni blinked rapidly. Though their beds were separated by Max’s and a couple bedside tables, June could spot the difference in Danni’s eyes as if she were right up close.

The Asian girl’s dark eyes shifted quickly from black to the whitest shade of blue she’d ever seen, even on the colour wheel. It was so unnatural for someone like Danni yet at the same time, they were strangely befitting.

“No animals?” June joked.

“Nah. Boring. They have teeny brains and I can’t think properly with them.”

June had meant it as a joke but was pleasantly surprised by the response. It seemed as if joking about those sorts of things was a normal standard at Evergreen.

“So, I should have asked you this before but what exactly can you do?”

Danni’s gaze was focused on her hand as she morphed it several times, lengthening her nails, changing her skin tone like it was as normal as checking her own reflection.

“I’m not exactly sure what you would call it,” June replied meekly. She shuddered at even thinking about her freakish electrical charges as some sort of power.

In fact, the very idea of accepting, much less embracing the ability to spontaneously give off electrical currents almost disgusted her. June would have given anything for a power as non-destructive as Danni’s or as harmless as Max’s.

June much rather preferred the notion of spontaneous invisibility than something as damaging as electricity.

“Describe it to me.”
