Familiar faces darted in and out of her sight as well as those flashing Redwood badges but nobody paid June any mind as she stood there, her legs locked in terror.
More booms echoed throughout the town square, adding to the growing cloud of black smoke in the air.
The sound of car and fire alarms going off filled the air, adding to the noise that deafened June’s ears.
It was only when something crackled and fizzed that June managed to regain feeling in her legs and inched backwards.
A telephone pole from nearby suddenly went crashing to the ground, buzzing loudly in its wake. It brought down a couple more with a groan while one even managed to puncture a window in a nearby building.
June began to step away from the danger site. She grunted when a couple of people came running and screaming her way, shouldering her aside.
She wasn’t exactly sure why it had taken so long but finally, realisation sank deep into her skin: the town was under attack and it wasn’t any ordinary bombing.
“June? June!”
Max’s frantic voice seeped into her ears just as panic built up in her chest. Her hands started sparking dangerously, the vibration of an oncoming charge building up in the palms of her hands.
“We looked everywhere for you!” Max gasped, grabbing her arm with a violent tug. “Come on, we’ve gotta make it back to the bus!”
June nodded wordlessly, curling her fingers over her palms. She followed Max, weaving between the throng of fleeing people. June raised a hand to save one ear from potential damage but it only seemed to make the sounds of panic worse.
Max stopped all of a sudden. June stumbled into her friend’s back with another ungraceful grunt. She righted herself then felt Max’s grip loosening on her arm.
“Back away, June,” Max whispered out of the corner of her mouth, her arms slowly lowering to her sides.
June did as she was told and at the same time raised her eyes to see what had Max so scared.
The first thing that caught her eye were the figures leaping from roof to roof from afar. Lithe and nimble, they jumped with unnatural ease. Next came a wave of figures in the distance, on the ground this time. A horde of them came charging down the road, some of them a blur which June easily pinpointed as speed talents without hesitating.
“Rebels,” Max gasped, picking up her pace. “Run!”
June turned, leaning forward to follow Max but the other girl had suddenly vanished. June’s eyes bulged in horror as she ran blindly down one street after another, her breath quickening. Of all times, Max’s invisibility had to kick in now?
The eerie feeling of being followed crawled up her spine. June picked up her pace, her heart threatening to burst from her chest as she turned another corner. She dared to steal a glance over her shoulder and found an empty street littered with several stray balls of fire that weren’t bothering to spread.
June faced forward again, narrowly avoiding another fallen telephone line. She squeezed between two cars that had swerved to a stop, black skid marks marking their clumsy trail. How the street had emptied so fast, she wasn’t sure.
However, what she was sure about was the fact that June was still being followed. Call it a sixth sense but whether the street was empty or not didn’t matter. June had come to learn that since people with superpowers existed in the world, nothing seemed impossible anymore.
