Whispers and gossip, rumours about the rebels planning some sort of major assault on the school circulated within a matter of days. Yet it was in the same amount of time that the hype started dying down.
And soon enough, June found herself nervously preparing for the first day of school, early in the morning and very much anxious.
“What if I don’t get you two in my classes?” June muttered. She adjusted her jumper more comfortably. “Damn it, are the uniforms really necessary?”
June had enjoyed living a uniform-free life at the school so far yet having recently learned that uniforms were part of the requirement at attending Evergreen, June’s mood had dampened somewhat.
“It’s all part of the ‘Evergreen students are model private school kids’ sort of image,” Max joked while applying a layer of lipstick.
“At least it’s more comfortable than my last school’s,” June sighed wistfully.
At the mention of her previous school, June’s shoulders slumped. She missed having Erica around, the familiarity of her last school. It wasn’t like her time at Evergreen had been a complete waste: she’d gotten to know more people, acquaint herself with the buildings though not entirely the classrooms since they were off-limits except for summer school students.
“You had a uniform at your last school?” Danni questioned in surprise. She mussed up her hair and it rapidly changed from black to a light shade of brown.
“An all-girls school and the principal was sort of stuck up,” June replied. “I definitely don’t miss her.”
“Wait till you personally meet our principal,” Danni laughed and her eyes changed colour again. “She’s not stuck up but she definitely takes on the role of principal way too seriously.”
“Don’t talk about Ms. Wilson like that,” Max said defensively. She looked up with a frown and a slight crease in her brow. “She just wants to make sure we’re performing to the best of our ability.”
“Principal’s pet,” Danni muttered as she passed June towards the wardrobe.
“Heard that,” Max shot back.
June grinned. “Thanks. Maybe today won’t be that bad at all.”
“Of course not.” Max smoothened her hair before pulling it up into a sleek tight ponytail. “At least you don’t have invisibility to deal with. Heck, on my first day, I was so prepared for everything and suddenly, everybody is bumping into me. I didn’t even know why until I realised I didn’t have a reflection. Kind chaotic since my teachers were marking me absent. Then a bunch of art students were mucking around with the paint and –”
“Okay, not helping,” Danni cut in before June could have a heart attack. “Remember, we don’t want to scare our roommate away before school even starts.”
“Oh, right.” The other girl smiled sheepishly. “Sorry. But you don’t have invisibility so you don’t need to worry at all. You don’t even have Danni’s power so nobody will notice if your face suddenly –”
Danni threw a pillow at her with an impressive aim and arm, cutting her off mid-sentence. “Seriously, shut up.”
Max pulled the pillow away with a scowl. Pink marks remained on the white case and she groaned at the sight of it.
June stifled a giggle.
“Don’t tell me that was mine,” Max whined.
Danni smirked, giving June a fleeting glance. “Right. Wasn’t yours. No worries.”
