Scarlet was only just lucky to have caught him before he apparated somewhere, where she wouldn't be able to find him. Her stomach clenched as this was the third time she had apparated tonight and she hated every minute of it. Quickly, as though sucked out of a tube she landed harshly on the ground of a shabby apartment. After regaining her mental state for only a mere second what physical connection she had with Remus had gone. He had stormed off and slammed a door behind him.
Scarlet looked around silently, this was clearly his home, it had the same kind of air of when he taught at Hogwarts. She didn't move, afraid that he would startle him, she wasn't even sure if he knew she was here. And as for making him think she was an intruder, it was rude of her to have followed him here uninvited. Breathing slowly she finally made her decision and gingerly made her way to the door that he was obviously behind.
Knocking twice she spoke into the wood, "Remus?"
As expected he didn't answer but there was the small sound of springs being released from pressure. She waited what felt like hours, when reality only a minute had passed before she decided to knock again. And this time, she decided to try a different approach.
"D- Dad?" She whispered through the crack in the door.
Again, he didn't respond instantly which was what she had expected anyway, but what happened next took her by surprise and hurt her.
"Don't." His shaky breath echoed from behind the door, "I don't deserve that title..."
A small twang of pain in the chest caused Scarlet to falter and stumble backwards in shock. The tears did not bead her eyes, but they stung as though she was about to cry. Rushing her hand through her hair to distract herself, she only just heard a loud thud at the bottom of the door.
Something came upon her like she had never felt before and she pulled out her wand and unlocked the door. It swung open towards her and revealed a heaped mess of shabby robes, covering a shaking figure. She paused looking down upon the man she looked up to as a father figure, she had never seen him like this, and to see him in this state tainted her perceptions. Tenderly she walked over to him and crouched behind him, placing a gentle hand on his shoulder.
"Remus?" She spoke his name, and slowly made her way around to face him, he did not meet her eyes.
"Remus... He didn't mean... You'll make a great father, I know it." She tried to comfort him, and at last her words yielded an effect on him.
"But I'm a monster... What child would want a monster for a parent?" He looked at her and his eyes truly showed the maturity and hardship he was.
"If you're a monster, than so am I. And so is Tonks and so is your unborn child. Don't you see, we're all monsters, you and me are just a little bit furrier than everyone else." She laughed.
"But-"
"But nothing. Tonks loves you, that's why she married you. If she can love you then so can your kid. Love is powerful and works in mysterious ways, I know, I'm sounding like Dumbledore. But seriously Remus, did you really take it to heart what her family thinks? Sure, her parents might be a little disappointed, but you can't please everyone and you might as well die trying if you want the world to love you. And what about the rest of her family? Aren't most of them in league with You-Know-Who? They're trying to ruin this world and they're planting these terrible things in your head. Who cares, if you turn into a beast once a month, you can't help it. This world isn't like those muggle fairytales, and I can't guarantee us all a happy ending, but that's why we're fighting. To make things better."
It was strange to see him sitting there, listening to her every word. It was like their roles had reversed, now she was the parent figure and he was the scared child. It was strange what war could do to people. Giving him a final look she wrapped his arms around him and despite her smallness compared to him she held him as tightly as she could. However, to her greatest shock, he started to shake with the undeniable pattern of laughter, although it was more of a chuckle.
