I pushed my way through the crowd of junkies, reaching Halsey in no time, and immediately began untying her from the chair. Her body was dependent on the restraints, and as soon as I took them off, she started hunching over in the seat.

"Grandpappy!" She exclaimed, leaning forward and falling out of the chair, stumbling past me and falling into the wizard's arms, "You came along too? You know, I actually kind of missed you. Crazy, right? I was smoking this joint they offered me, and...and I thought of you, and how you would've yelled at me for it."

He chuckled nervously, holding the girl out in front of him and supporting her so that she was standing. "I'm glad you thought of me, but we need to get you out of here. Your mother is worried sick."

"Why?" She whined, pushing herself away from Link and slowly moving to a couch, lying down on it. "It's not like she even cares about me. I mean, I could be dead and she wouldn't care because she's so infatuated with my dad...and now Brendon. I swear, she's such a slut; can't keep her legs shut for anyone."

"Hey, that's your mom you're talking about," Link snapped.

"The word 'mom' means nothing to me," She objected, curling up beside one of the sleeping strangers and pointing a finger towards me, "And she agrees with me." I honestly did. I never knew my mom, but then Halsey is so blinded that she couldn't see that Rachael truly cared for her.

"Just ignore her, it's the drugs talking." I approached the girl, staring in her eyes and noticing that her pupils were the size of needle pins. Marijuana wasn't the cause of Halsey's symptoms. I grabbed one of her arms, pulling up her sleeves to reveal puncture wounds. "These are fresh, it's a miracle she hasn't overdosed or died."

"I'm a hybrid," She retorted, "I don't overdose or die."

"Without your powers, you're practically human," I corrected her, "One more dose and you could have died."

"Oh, right." She bit her lip. "I forgot that bitch took my powers from me. Crazy to think that if I still had them, maybe I wouldn't be here right now. Just another reason to hate her."

"Come on." I shook my head, picking her up and slinging one of her arms over my shoulder. I slipped an arm around her so she could stand. "We have to get her to the witches, maybe they can help her."

"You know, it's funny how you're friends with my mom. I mean, you and I knew each other way before my mom and you knew each other. And it's just like...you knew who my mom was, and you knew she was your enemy, yet you befriended her. What was going through your mind when you did that?" She turned her head to look up at me, her lips slightly parted as she anticipated my answer. "Were you drunk or something?"

"Don't do this right now." I wasn't willing to fight or play any of Halsey's childish games. I needed to get her somewhere safe right then.

"Why? I'm just curious...I want to know why you would even associate yourself with her, knowing she's my mom, part of the reason I'm the way I am."

"I don't remember her before this year, so I couldn't tell you why even if I wanted to." I looked over at Halsey who could barely keep her head up. "Your mom may not be the best parent in the world, but she loves you, kid. I don't know why I chose to be friends with her, and I don't think I ever will."

"That's a lie," She teased, smirking, "You're just afraid of remembering the person you were after meeting that stupid little human you've brought along with you. Lindsey is her name? Or no...no! It's Lynn! Lynn. You're afraid of remembering the person you became after her, the person who became my mom's best friend, who put aside her differences with my dad so that they'd work together, who fell in love with her mate and forgot about the stupid little human she had an affair with in Texas. You're afraid of remembering who you are, Kenya, because who you are doesn't allow you to be with the girl you want to be with! Right?"
