I don't remember falling asleep. All I knew was that I was awoken by someone shaking my shoulder roughly.
I jerked up and blinked slowly to see who was shaking me. When my vision cleared, the driver was standing outside the door of the car, staring down at me with worry. I groaned and climbed out of the car, shooting the man an apologetic look.
"Are you alright, miss?"
"I'm fine, I just need to get my mind off of things. I've had a rough day."
He eyed me and raised an eyebrow. "If the fresh bruise on your face is anything to go by, I'd say it's been more than 'rough'."
My hand shot up to the cheek that my mother had slapped. Sure enough, the skin was tender and caused me to jerk my hand away. I sighed and gave him a small smile. "Okay, you're right. It hasn't gone at all like I expected it to."
He shook his head, moving towards the back of the car. "Life never goes as planned. You'd do best to remember that, m'dear."
I chuckled at his words. I already knew that, but sometimes I hoped that every once in a while things would go my way.
We unloaded all of my belongings, which didn't take more than five minutes. The driver then left after telling me that someone would be down to grab my things and me in a few minutes. I stood in front of a set of iron-wrought gates with an emblem on them. A sign was engraved into a slab of marble that rested on the right side of the stone wall next to the gates.
Lune Academy
I smiled, feeling excited. This is what I've been waiting for since I started high school. The moment that college started and I could get away from my old life. This was the next chapter in my story, and I couldn't wait for it to start.
Footsteps sounded from just beyond the gates, and I stumbled back as the old and rusty looking gates opened. An older man came into view from around the bend in the road beyond the gate. He had graying hair, but sharp blue eyes that I had no doubt could pin you in place should he be angered. A younger female who looked about my age trailed behind him.
"Hello, my dear. I assume you are Maya Rivera?"
"Yes, sir."
He nodded, holding his hand out for me to shake. "I am the Headmaster here. My name is Hayes. This is my assistant, Jane. She will take you to get your schedule and then to your room. Your belongings will be there before you, so do not worry. I must get back to the office, I have a lot of paperwork to do before the school year starts. Farewell, Maya."
With that he turned and walked back up the path that he just came down. He was a strange man, or at least that was my impression with that small conversation. Jane cleared her throat and started walking, though at a much slower pace than the Headmaster, waving for me to follow her.
I turned to look at all of my stuff, but it was not there. Only my book bag was left sitting on the ground. My head whipped around, trying to spot who took my stuff, but I didn't see anyone in sight. Weird.
I grabbed my back pack and turned to follow Jane. My eyes widened when I saw how far she was already. I quickly ran to her side, looking around again to try and spot my belongings. She smiled widely at me as we walked side by side.
"Welcome to Lune Academy!"
"Thanks. So what exactly do you guys do? I only applied because you had the earliest starting date and I needed to get out of my house. The pamphlet that was sent in the mail wasn't very descriptive."
She gave me a confused look. "You don't know about Lune Academy? Did your parents not tell you about it?"
"Um, no? Were they supposed to?"
