Ethan's POV

That new girl was something else.

She was like a breath of fresh air after getting the wind knocked out of you. It feels great to be able to breathe again, but it also hurts since it's too much at once. She is going to stir up the fragile balance of the school even more than she already has.

I shook my head to clear it, and sent one last curious glance towards said girl. Taking a few steps, I left the dining room and rushed down the main hall. I could hear mumbling up ahead, and sighed, but hurried forward anyways.

I turned the corner to find my betrothed grumbling and pacing angrily across the hall. As soon as she saw me, she rushed forward and flung herself onto me. I let her cling to me since there was nothing that I could do to get her to stop until she chose to collect herself. After a few seconds, she pushed me back and propped her hands on her hips.

"Why didn't you stop her? You should've had my back, Ethan!"

"Felicity, I can't get into any trouble here. My mom is already hesitant about letting me stay here, if I get into a fight over something stupid, then-"

"Something stupid?!"

I sighed and crossed my arms. "You tried to roast that girl over your reputation. I'm sorry if that seems like a dumb reason to me."

She huffed and her arm twitched. My hand shot up to grab her wrist before she made contact with my face. "You're supposed to support me, Ethan! You're my boyfriend!"

"Not by choice," I muttered.

When we were younger, Felicity and I were childhood friends. As we grew up, she developed a crush on me. At first, I felt the same and we dated for two years. Then, I realized that I didn't feel the same anymore. We broke up, which crushed her heart, but instead of moving on, she turned into the twisted person she is now. When we turned 18, she declared that we were mates, which is why she is now my betrothed, thanks to my parent's advisors. They believed that I should have been betrothed to someone since I was born, in case I didn't find my mate, there would be a Queen. So if I don't find my true mate soon, Felicity will be the next Queen of the Elementals.

I shuddered at the thought. She would destroy everything that my parents worked so hard to build.

"Whatever, let's just go. I don't want to run into that disgusting thing again today," Felicity hissed, yanking her arm from my grasp.

She turned, flicking her hair over her shoulder, and marched down the hall. I sighed, sending one last glance over my shoulder just in time to see the new girl limping down the hall I had turned off of to find Felicity. Ilisa and Lottie were on either side of her, acting as crutches. The new girl threw her head back and laughed, tripping over her feet, which sent the other two stumbling until all three were just holding each other and laughing.

Seeing the pure emotion brought a smile to my lips. I shook my head and continued down the hall after Felicity. Something about the new girl made me care less about the lie Felicity spread about us being mates. I feel more confident in standing up to her and the royal advisors. Maybe it's a good thing that she's here, because I could sure use some confidence if I am ever going to stand up to that snake. And I'm sure that I'm not the only one that needs some extra confidence.

Maya's POV

"Where did you learn to fight like that?"

Ilisa, Lottie and I had finally gotten out of the healer's office. We, and by that I mean I, grabbed some food from the Dining Hall, and then they showed me to my room. We were currently lounging on the huge bed that was in my room while I stuffed my face with food.
