If only Avalon had known about the love spell before she'd signed those blasted dotted lines. But the Moon Goddesses clearly had a wicked sense of humour. For there she was: sitting at a table in a vast kitchen bathed in light and large enough to fit her whole apartment. On a warm afternoon in early September in a huge house in Castelldefels. Talking details about the job she was going to take.
She should've realised sooner what sort of trouble it would get her into. There had been this weird sense of foreboding that she'd blatantly ignored throughout the meeting, after all. Being a witch by nature, that should've been the first clue for her. But had she listened to her preternatural premonitions? Of course not. That life she had left behind her.
The middle-aged woman sitting opposite of her at the kitchen table gave her a wondrous look. "You okay? You've been dazing off an awful lot these past few minutes, is everything all right?"
"Hm? I mean, yes! Sorry! I'm fine," Avalon replied, feeling her cheeks grow warmer in embarrassment. She shook her head, trying to get rid of the strange feeling that had once again crept over her. Stupid powers! "I guess I'm still getting used to the idea of me working for one of Barcelona's superstars, is all."
Mentally slapping herself for such a bad excuse – as if she were some stupid fangirl! –, she was glad to find the other woman taking her words in good stride, only chuckling at them. Phew. "Oh, don't you worry! I have no doubt you two will get along fine. My son's a well-mannered, good-natured and fun-loving man. Davi is a lot like him, actually."
Avalon lifted a black eyebrow; the one with the iron ring piercing in it. She remembered the first time she met her future work assignment only a few days ago; a wonderful twist of fate that couldn't have happened at a better time.
Of course, that had been before she got to find out what a cruel bitch fate could be.
"So, by implication, that means he's a sensitive, sad and quiet kid," she responded dryly.
The woman – also known as Nadine, the grandmother of Avalon's future ward Davi – laughed. "Dear Lord, those wouldn't be words I'd use to describe Neymar! But you're right, they do fit Davi at the moment. But it'll get better," she said in an optimistic manner, more to reassure herself than Avalon. Her gaze turned distant for a moment. Then she cleared her throat, returning to the present. "Especially now that you are here, right? Now, about those pesky little details people like to call business deals."
Nadine looked down at the papers lying on the table between them. Avalon's contract, among other things. "I will show you the rest of the house and your room right after we're done with the legal stuff. I understand you've read everything?" Avalon nodded. "Good, good. Is there anything you want to talk about? Questions about the confidentiality agreement perhaps? I realise that's one of the things people usually ask about. But you're bound to hear confidential details when you live here to take care of Davi. So this one's non-negotiable. Neymar's privacy – and everyone else's under this roof for that matter – is very important to us all."
