Football was boring.
Utterly and unbelievably dull.
That was the conclusion that Avalon reached after only ten minutes or so of watching the match. Lucky for her, following the events on the pitch wasn't the reason she was here at the Camp Nou stadium the next day. Unlucky for her, attending such matches was going to be a regular activity from now on. After all, someone had to keep an eye on and entertain the five-year-old boy, also known as "the reason". Davi was clad in last season's kit with his daddy's number on the back and looking around lazily. Like Avalon, he was bored out of his mind as they sat in the grandstands and waited for the match to end.
It was Avalon's first official day of duty as Davi's nanny and things were going exceptionally well, all things considered. Nadine and Neymar's father (for simplicity reasons called "Pai" by everyone because he went by the same name as his son) sat in the row of seats closest to the players' bench and the tunnel leading to the locker rooms, or so she'd been told. Both of them were watching the match with intensity.
Every once in awhile Nadine would turn her attention to where Avalon and Davi had relocated to after only a couple of minutes after kick-off. They kept themselves entertained with different games on the small corridor and set of steps between the rows of seats. Currently, it was "I spy with my little eye". Nadine watched them with an estimating look, as if checking to see if Avalon indeed was capable of taking care of her grandson.
Avalon didn't mind the barely veiled supervision. Having the grandparents there for the first time of her watching the boy wasn't such a bad idea. It was a smart move, actually; one that many parents liked to do when looking for a new nanny. One had to remember that Avalon still was just a stranger to Davi and that there was no guarantee he would remain with and listen to her right away.
Turned out nobody had needed to worry. By the time Avalon had decided to end both her and Davi's misery with games of their own, the boy's mood had turned for the better. He hadn't had a problem with going with her to the bathroom or getting something to drink either, all the while playing "I spy" with her. Mind you, it wasn't the most fun of games but it was a good start. Especially since there wasn't much else but a smartphone that could've kept Davi entertained. Which, Avalon had been informed, was more of a "last resort" solution to the boy's boredom (an educational measure that had been long overdue – or so she'd been told).
"My, you're really good at this!" Avalon commented with a smile when Davi had yet again guessed her "spy" fairly quickly. She sat on the stairs next to the seats, holding Davi's lemonade as she watched him jump up and down the stairs to a rhythm only he understood; kids and their fantasy and endless level of energy. "Let's see, what else is there...?"
She looked around, ignoring the cheers and roars from the crowd around them. The club's burgundy and dark blue colours, found around every corner of the stadium, had been amongst the first spies they'd picked. So those were out of the question now. As was the green of the grass, the red of the drinking cup, the blue of Nadine's jacket, and the pink of Avalon's shawl that she loosely wore around her neck – an accessory more than to keep her warm. Oh, and her jet-black hair that framed her face had taken an extra lot of time to guess, much to Davi's entertainment.
