Neymar was completely unaware of the spell that had just been cast. Thus, unperturbed, he went over to his girlfriend and enclosed her in his arms.
The last tangles of magic hadn't even left her fingertips toward the front door.
Avalon had to remind herself to take a breath – and that normal humans couldn't see magic like she did.
Which, right now, was a very good thing.
"Don't worry, my dear," Nina said in perfect Spanish. Because of course she would be fluent in another language; it seemed to fit the theme of decadent perfection she seemed to carry, with a hint of aristocratic arrogance to match. Her voice had sounded surprisingly silky and soft; at first. But treacherous and venomous were more fitting words for what she said next. "It's just a stupid cat."
"You're probably right," Neymar said, a silly smile on his face.
His words made Avalon do a double-take. Excuse me?! She pursed her lips, feeling insulted for Zelo's sake. Then again, as she took a calming breath, she recalled that Neymar actually was fond of Zelo. Why else would he keep on trying to make a cat like him? It was simply the stupid love spell working its magic to make Neymar agree – nothing else.
Despite them being an insult, Nina's words caused a stone the size of Mount Everest to fall off Avalon's chest. Zelo being a "stupid cat" meant that the concealment spell hidden in his collar was working. Yet uncertain still, Avalon glanced at Gil, who indicated a soft shrug as an answer. He didn't quite know what to make of everything yet either.
"Come on," said footballer went on, not even asking the woman in his arms what she'd been doing in that weird looking pose. Avalon knitted her eyebrows, glancing at the entrance. What had she done to the door...? She'd have to set Zelo and his nose on solving that mystery. "There's someone here who's been waiting to meet you."
Avalon blinked, doing her mightiest not to stare. And who could that be? Oh, right. That'd be me! Her palms were suddenly sweaty. For the moment it took Nina to turn her head into her direction, she'd even forgotten how to breathe. Again. If she couldn't even handle meeting that damned woman without risking to faint any minute, this was going to become a problem. Breathing kind of was important.
Her hands shook slightly and goosebumps rose all over her skin. She put her hands behind her back, entwining her fingers. Then she did her best to exude a calm, friendly, and slightly curious aura, adding a soft smile for good measure – what need was there for the nanny to be scared or nervous, after all?
Unless you were a witch determined to break the spell of another.
This was it. The moment she'd dreaded for so long. Would Nina know she was a witch? Would Nina know that she knew that she was a witch? Would her own trusty concealment spell work? She didn't dare raise her hand to check if the eyebrow piercing was still where it was supposed to be. Would Nina see that as a provocation and attack her? Would she be able to dodge in time? Would–?
