Summary: transgender AU.
Might be a bit heavier on the angst but nothing major.
Note: I'm not going into this completely blindly, I've read a bit about the whole transition process, time, what needs to be done in what order, the technicalities, I'm not a complete idiot. I didn't do a lot of research on the emotional side of things, so I'm so sorry if that's inaccurate. I hope I don't hurt or offend anyone.

No POV:
When Sam and Gabriella met, they were only little kids, on the first day of elementary school. They had stumbled upon each other in break time, and decided they would be best friends the end of the day.
And they were.
All the way through elementary school, those two stayed as close as could be. Gabriella was practically a Winchester, and Sam was practically a Novak.
And then came middle school, a confusing time for the both. the now teenager Sam started to take notice of all the boys around him, seeing that they interest him a lot more than girls do. By Highschool he broke up with his girlfriend Jess, and dated a guy, just to see if he liked it. He came out to everyone as gay within three months.
Gabriella, however, had a much, much tougher journey. She had realized that she had never felt quite normal, something had always felt off, but she never quite understood what it was. By middle school, Gabriella started to hate the body she saw in the mirror, but couldn't quite get why. She had to agree with what a lot of people said, she had a beautiful body. She was petite, curvy yet still somewhat slim, and elegant. She had flowing golden hair, and an elegant face. She knew that the body she had was beautiful.
But she never felt right in it, it felt like a stranger's body. She hated it. And she had no god-damn idea why.
That is, until the two reached Highschool. She started going on the internet a lot more, and discovered so much more than the world the small town they lived in presented. Around 3 months into freshman year, she came out to Sam as pansexual. Sam had, of course, accepted her, along with (surprisingly) her family, which was extremely religious.
To this day she can remember what her father said. "If God were to create an attraction to more than one gender, how could I ever say he made a mistake, if he doesn't make any? It's a simple attraction, and I hope you'll be happy regardless of who you end up with, sweetheart".
But then she continued with her research. Knowing to avoid Tumblr by sophomore year, she checked website after website. And the more she looked at, the more she knew what was up with her.
By the middle of sophomore year, Gabriella slowly began to change, mostly by wearing only baggy clothes, always having the flowing, long hair I mentioned above in a beanie (before it was cut) and cringed every time anyone said "she, her," or "Gabriella".
And the Novak left the poor Sam confused, intending to never tell him until it was time.
Time was, apparently, the ending of sophomore year, when he found her crying next to the changing rooms for PE.

"Gabby!" Sam yelled out Gabriella's nickname, who in response, looked up. "Why are you crying?" He asked, and as the Novak's eyes closed again, a warm, large hand cupped her cheek.
"Tell me what happened, please" Sam said, sitting down. "Was it one of the guys? The ones that mock you for how you dress? I'll rip their lungs out!" Sam yelled. Gabriella quickly stopped him. "No Sam, it's... It's not them"
