"You're sparing me?" his words came out shaky, and I tried to not notice.
"finally."
'You're the one talking... I'm the one taking all of the damage.'
"buddy. pal. i know how hard it must be... to make that choice."
His words interrupted my thoughts, and I couldn't bring myself to answer him. It didn't matter, he continued to talk anyways.
"to go back on everything you've worked up to. i want you to know... i won't let it go to waste."
A few tears fell from my eyes, and I moved to wipe them away.
'Just sparing you is putting everything I've done to waste.... I murdered my closest friends because of you... Tori, Papyrus, Undyne... '
"c'mere pal," he held his arms out, and I had to take a deep breath. Despite everything, I ran towards him, wrapping my arms around his neck. I broke down, sobbing.
An attack of a thousand bones pierced my skin, and I felt my soul breaking into two, and then into little specks of dust. Everything was black, but for some reason I could still hear him, Sans.
"geeettttttt dunked on!!!"
'That's just like you... idiot.'
"if we're really friends... you won't come back."
'I'll reset after I kill you... I don't want this anymore than you do, but I have to. If I don't...'
When I opened my eyes I was in the judgement hall, and I could see Sans farther down. Sighing to myself, I debated if it was really worth it.
"He hates me," I whispered.
'When I reset he won't even remember.'
"He remembers the resets."
'Then he'd know why you were doing this.'
"That's not true. He doesn't know why I've hurt him like this..."
'Papyrus will be back next reset.'
"It doesn't mean that I should have killed him. Papyrus didn't do anything!"
'It doesn't matter. This is the choice that I made. I have to go through with it, I have to kill Sans.'
I rushed into battle with the skeleton again, only barely making it to the point where he promises to spare me. Level 19, and I wasn't strong enough.
"I should have known," I said, more to myself.
He only went on with trying to convince me to give up, to stop fighting.
"I'm doing this because of you, you know. This isn't just some idle curiosity. I have a reason."
Something flicked within his right eye socket, but his left one kept shining blue.
"I thought... That if I could kill you just once. Well, I believed that I would get over my feelings for you. It's stupid, but I have to try."
Before he could respond in anyway, I tapped into my reset powers and went back to the beginning of the judgement hall. The deaths of about 100 monsters rested on my heart, and it took everything I had left within me to grasp my knife and go back into battle.
Death after death after death, resetting each time - heart breaking at his words each time. At some point he stopped counting how many times he had murdered me, and I lost track after that, it didn't matter... I always came to a defeat at the same point, when he pretends to give me another chance, when he calls upon our past timelines. It just reminded me of what I was throwing away, letting this evil grow inside of me. I don't want EXP, I don't want LV... I want love. I even scared Flowey, the flower.
"The flowers are in bloom as the birds will tell," I say my next battle begins.
'I'm in for a bad time... No matter what I do, I can't win. Killing Sans won't make me suddenly not love him, if anything it would make me crave him more... Though even in my peaceful endings, I tried everything. He doesn't feel that way about me. I have to get over him, that's why I was doing this.'
His first attack, his strongest as he claimed, starts out, and I do my best to keep my soul outside of the danger zones. I take significant damage, even though I had gone through it many times before. Though, just as Sans grows tired eventually, I was tired of fighting him.
'Why couldn't I see before that this was hopeless? I don't even know why I keep fighting at this point... Resetting would be easier.'
He dodged my attack, as he always did, and started dealing damage almost immediately.
'Blue... Stop... Stop signs... Blue stop signs... Yellow?'
A past timeline's memories came forth, reminding me of when Sans tried to teach me about blue attacks - confusing me with his choice of words by making sure I knew what he was talking about.
The attacks afterwards were simple enough, and I only healed up once - eating a slice of Butterscotch pie, the same slice that Toriel had given me. When our battle paused, and he asked me to stop, I thought aloud.
"Does it even matter... You'll kill me. Whether I continue or not."
He grinned as he realized that he had gotten me this way before.
"guess that means we weren't really friends then," he answered, suddenly serious.
"That couldn't be further from the truth," I muttered, "You... Papyrus... Tori, Undryne, Alphys, Asgore, Mettatton... We all got out, we were very close."
"do me a favor and don't tell the other sans-es," he responded, not hearing my words.
"I don't like promises, they only end up getting broken."
"At least I tried keeping this one."
"Yes, well, I'm sure Toriel would have wanted you to kill me where I stood if she knew what a danger I was.. But she's... But Mom is... She'll be back soon."
Those were the last words this world's Sans heard before I reset everything, going back to the very beginning. Flowey met me, as he always did in every timeline.
"Couldn't go through with it?"
"Shut up."
"That's no way of treating a friend!"
"You're no friend, not until you can form into Asriel."
"Well I'm not strong enough yet, so you'll have to settle for me. Flowey the flower!" The yellow flower winked at me, and began the sequence of teaching me about LOVE and "friendliness pellets".
I didn't rush towards them, I didn't catch them at all. It annoyed Flowey, of course, but he didn't seem surprised. After all, I had stopped catching them for quite awhile. Toriel came along shortly, and I smiled at myself... Mom was okay... I would see Sans soon... He wouldn't hate me and Papyrus would still be alive and well.
