"I don't think I'll have a future, Josh. If I do, it will be with the glowing eyes." Tyler sighed sadly.
"Can't it be with me?" Josh asked.
"Do you want it to be?" Tyler looked up.
"Of course I do." Josh smiled and nodded, despite the fact that the other boy couldn't see him in the darkness.
"Thanks, Josh."
"Don't thank me."
Tyler stood up and walked across the room to Josh's bed. Josh sighed. "This room is far too dark for us to stay around." He looked at Tyler. "I don't want to leave the dark, Josh." Tyler shook his head. "I know." Josh frowned. "Could you at least sleep?" Josh tilted his head. "I know you haven't slept in a long time. I could tell when I saw your face." "I can't sleep, Josh...it's not safe." He shook his head. "I'm afraid someone's gonna hurt me." Tyler sighed. "Then sleep with me. I'll protect you." Josh put a hand on Tyler's shoulder. Tyler shook his head. "No, Josh I-" "Do you trust me?" "I don't know, Josh.." He looked down. "I swear I'll protect you, Tyler." Josh hugged Tyler. Tyler nodded. "Alright, fine.." Tyler hugged Josh back. Josh smiled and laid back with Tyler in his arms, then pulled the blankets over them. "Goodnight, Tyler." Josh whispered. "Night, Josh." Tyler responded and easily fell asleep.
Josh woke up to something thrashing wildly next to him. He opened his eyes to see Tyler shaking violently and whispering things under his breath. Josh pulled Tyler into his arms and sat up. "Hey, Tyler, Tyler what's going on? What happened?" He held Tyler tightly as he sobbed and shook. "Hey, hey I'm here. I'm gonna protect you, remember?" He rocked back and forth. Tyler buried his face in Josh's chest. "I'm gonna protect you..I'm gonna protect you. You're safe." Josh continued to reassure him. Tyler finally looked up at Josh. "Josh, t-they're mad. I made them mad Josh." He whispered through sobs. "That's okay, Tyler. It's okay. I'm not mad at you." Josh put a hand on Tyler cheek and wiped his tears away. Tyler looked calm for a second, then screamed and jumped up, running to the light switch and turning it on. "Tyler, what happened?" Josh asked to the panicking boy in the middle of the room. Tyler shook his head and ran back to Josh. Josh immediately opened his arms to bring Tyler back into a tight hug. "Hey, Tyler. Listen, it's gonna be okay. Do you want to go back to sleep with the light on?" Josh asked. Tyler shook his head. Josh nodded. "Alright." He moved back to he could sit against the wall and hold Tyler more easily. He held him like that for hours, until he realized Tyler had fallen asleep. He smiled and watched Tyler for a few minutes, before going to sleep himself.
"Sleep well, Tyler."
