"What?" Aria snorted. "Yeah right. A dragon? You mean those lizard animals with wings and magical voo-doo powers from those storybooks? Everyone knows they aren't real."

Skie looked insulted. But it was Brunner who responded. "It's all true," he said calmly. "So was the Holy Dragon War. And Queen Cress. And-"

Aria laughed. It was maniacal. "This is ridiculous. I'm outta here." She turned and started walking away.

Suddenly, a gust of wind picked her up from her feet and formed a small tornado around her. She tried in vain to escape, and she knew that this was no coincidence. No gust of wind could just pick her up like a toy and toss her around. Aria grumbled, and looked back at the two men. "What is going on? Why is-" she stopped short, her attention fixed on Skie. "Your eyes." She breathed.

Skie's eyes had turned bright green, and when Aria looked, she saw images. A plain of green, a gentle breeze swaying the grass. A tornado, destroying everything in it's path. And a ship, slowly sailing, with a sharp wind to guide it's journey. Aria saw that all in an instant. And when she looked deeper into those eyes, she realized they had become slitted. Like a cat's.

"Are you...Are you a dragon?"

The wind gradually slowed, and Aria landed back on her feet. She couldn't get her eyes off of the man's eyes. Gradually, his eyes turned back to it's natural color, and slitted eyes turned back to human.

"Answering your question, yes, I am a dragon." Skie said. "So is Brunner." He nodded to him. "I am only going to give you a quick summary.

"Over a century ago, the Holy Dragon War ended, also resulting in the deaths of thousands of dragons, as well as our leader, Queen Cress. One of the only things your storybooks were wrong about was the fact that our species was completely annihilated. The few survivors left the human world, and traveled to a hidden place, and rebuilt the dragon society.

"We are Dragon Scouts, from the Land of Dragons. Dragon Scouts are one of the few occupations we have in our world. We are sent back into the human world, and search for unsuspecting young dragons, and bring them back to our land for proper training before they are caught by the Knights.

"Aria, there are many different types of dragons. I am an air dragon, that's why I can control wind. Brunner here," he gestured to him. "Is an earth dragon. If you come with us, we might be able to protect you before the Change."

"What's the Change?"

"The Change is when a young dragon's abilities first starts to show. It starts with eye color changing and pupils dilating, then an uncontrollable hunger. Followed by a drastic increase in physical strength, your abilities will start to show. That's when we will be able to figure out your type. But that will probably be at the Dragon Academy, where you will be trained to harness your power and use it for the good of your people.

"After a few years of training, you'll be able to completely transform into a dragon. Most dragons, however, like to assume the form of a human. Being a dragon will increase your five senses, as well as being to talk to any other dragon telepathically, as long as they are also in dragon form, no matter the distance. That kind of ability is very helpful in war. "

"Then how did you lose the holy dragon war?"

Skie looked uncomfortable. It was Brunner who responded. "If you come with us, you'll figure out that question yourself. I'm not trying to force you anything, but you will find yourself in a very tight place if you don't. Like the dungeon."

Aria scowled at him, thinking that he had made a joke. "This isn't funny right now-" Suddenly, a giant roar of a crowd echoed through the alley.

Aria whipped back to stare at Brunner. "What was that?! That came from the direction of my house!"

Brunner had a solemn look on his face. "This was what I was talking about."

Aria ignored him, running toward her house. What she saw made her head spin with disbelief.

A cheering and booing crowd, standing in front of her house.

Her little brother and mother, on their knees, head bowed in front of them.

And the sword that was directly over their necks, ready to strike.
