Chapter 7

My efforts to avoid Raleigh had been fruitful, especially since he had been suspended for that fight. I wasn’t concerned on when he was coming back, but he and I were the talk of the school. Everybody still believed we were dating and I tried my hardest to dispel the rumors, but nothing worked. During the week he was gone; five new kids came to the school. Two of them joined my chemistry and government class, which I found odd. Their names were Abey and Cameron. They didn’t seem like people of interest to me but they had seemed to have taken an interest in me, especially Cameron. They didn’t feel weird or anything like Raleigh did, so I just took it as friendliness.

Of course when Raleigh did come back, it was hard to avoid him, especially since we had classes together. I had made sure that before he was back, my seat was moved, so Raleigh and I didn’t sit next to each other. Also, I had made sure to fight the temptation to switch classes, figuring that would arise too much suspicion. Judging by what I had learned from my grandfather over the past weekend, I figured I could help Raleigh out by not drawing attention. He seemed hurt that I ignored him though. The days went along and he was quiet, only glancing at me occasionally. I started to feel kind of bad; he walked around like a defeated puppy.

I remember one day throughout school, I had this bad feeling. It did not recede the whole day, but I managed to brush it off. When the day was over I proceeded through the empty halls to my locker. It was always quiet after school let out seeing as everybody darted out of school as soon as the bell rang. Looking around, I saw nobody in the hall. It was quiet, no footsteps at all. I did hate being alone and a part of me wished I still had Raleigh. When I finally opened it the door made a loud clang that echoed throughout the empty hallways. I had managed to pull my book bag out when I felt a hot breath on my neck. “Elena Miller,” said the guy. I tried to side glance and see who it was, but I couldn’t.

“Yeah,” I answered, my voice cracked. The only thought running through my head is where was Raleigh and hoping he would come save me. I tried to turn around but the person gripped my arms.

“I have some questions for you.” He sniffed my neck.

“Yeah.” I was hoping he wouldn’t bite me next. My heart was pounding; I didn’t know what was gonna happen.

“Whose scent is this?” He sniffed again and that’s when I realized who it was. It was Cameron, the new kid. I must’ve had Raleigh’s scent on me.

“What scent? I’m wearing perfume.” I shivered as I felt a cold breeze in the school. Somebody had opened the door. Cameron sniffed my neck again.

“It’s Raleigh isn’t it?” I shook my head no. “Yes, it is his. The alpha.” The way he said alpha made me scared and my name wasn’t even Raleigh. The only person I could think about was him and where was he. I needed help and I knew it. “He’s not gonna come save you, so stop thinking about him.” He turned me around and I was looking him in the eyes. They were glowing yellow and I could see fangs in his mouth. This was scarier than Raleigh, especially being up close. I felt fear rising in my chest. He picked me up by my neck and stared at me. I clawed at his hands and felt it getting extremely hard to breathe. My feet were kicking under me. “What are you doing with the alpha? You’re not one of us.”

“I’m…..not………with the…….alpha,” I choked out. I could feel my consciousness slipping away. All of a sudden I felt his hand let go and I hit the floor. When I looked up Cameron was gone and Raleigh was standing in front of me, guarding me. He was hunched over like in an attack position.
