Chapter 11

Raleigh’s POV

After the scrimmage on Tuesday, I had a missed called from Elena, but no voicemail. I shrugged it off and thought it was just a butt dial. I text her to ask her why she called but never got a response. On my way home, I forgot about it, figuring it was nothing, boy was I wrong.

It was even weirder when she wasn’t at school the next day, but again I really didn’t think anything of it. She had told me that she was comfortable biking now, so I didn’t have to pick her up. I kind of figured she was sick or something and wasn’t feeling well. Elena had never missed a day this year, but then again she hadn’t been here long. Everybody needs a break every once and awhile or maybe she just got senioritis. I made sure to get all her work for her, since she had missed the day, planning to take it to her after practice.

But, after practice, I got caught up doing something for my mom so I couldn’t get it to her at a decent time. I thought maybe I would see her the next day, but yet again she didn’t show up. By this time I was starting to get a really bad feeling, like something had happened. Then I remembered Elena was a fighter.

Honestly, I had missed her dearly over the two days. She was like my best friend and I always loved being around her. Of course I had kissed her and kind of saw her as my girlfriend, as awkward as it seemed. I cared a great deal about her and her safety was my number one priority. That girl was like the light of my life.

After the second day of her being gone, I decided to follow my instincts. I ditched practice that day and drove down the route she biked home. My eyes kept a look out for anything that looked unusual. I drove especially slowly down the road she said was making her feel weird. The trees and the residential houses seemed to look normal, like everything was okay. The street was quiet, which is why I could see why she hated it. When I got to the turn she usually took, that’s when I saw it.

Her bright blue book bag and her bike were laid in the ditch, like she had fallen off. I put on my emergency signal lights and got out of my truck as soon as I could. It felt like I had to take a million and one steps just to get to it. I could see dirt dug up on the side of the ditch, like somebody had tried to run up it. The bike was lying on its side, with the book bag lying next to it. I immediately panicked; somebody had to have taken her. She didn’t die or her body would still be in the ditch, or she would’ve been on the news. I sniffed the air around me and immediately recognized the smell.

            Cameron was here…

I quickly put her stuff in my truck and sped off towards her house. I had to tell somebody, even if it was her mom. When I arrived at her house, I ran up the stairs, and knocked furiously on the door. To my relief her grandfather opened the door. “Cameron took her Mr.J,” I immediately blurted. He looked at me in shock; I guess the mystery had just been solved.
