Chapter 14

Hearing the car door slam jolted my attention. I knew Cameron was back and I was out here, right in the open again. I had only managed to make it to the unlocked door. Maybe escaping was going to be harder than I thought. My mind panicked again. I immediately knew the closet was going to be a bad choice. That was where I had gotten caught the first time. Before I could act, the lock started to turn, then the doorknob. I was caught right in the open; this was going to be awful. When the door turned and opened, I hid behind it. Cameron came into the house, all dressed up, not even thinking about shutting the door. I could tell there was something on his mind. The lights of the car were casting into the dark house, reflecting off the kitchen stove. Now was my chance of escape and I knew it. I thanked my mind for telling me to close the door of the room I was in, which fooled Cameron into thinking I was sleep or something. My phone was in my pocket, but it wasn’t charged, it was still dead. I took a deep breath and tiptoed around the door. When I reached the door frame, I felt my heart rate increase, I was finally getting out! My eyes squinted as I stood there, dirty and dingy in front of the car lights. When my eyes had finally focused, I could tell there was a girl sitting in the car. I tried my hardest to get down the porch steps quietly and quickly. After my boots touched grass, I ran to the passenger side door and tapped on the window. The girl in the car jumped, like I scared her. “Please, help me, please, please, please,” I pleaded. She rolled down the window and looked at me in shock.

“What’s going on?” she asked. I kept glancing at the door, hoping Cameron didn’t come out any time soon.

“I need you to help me.” I pleaded with this woman, I didn’t know who she was but I knew she was my only way out. She stepped out of the car as I started to shake. “Please, please, please, help me.” She pulled the seat up, allowing access to the back seat, her face twisted into disgust.

“I knew there was something wrong with him. Get in the back seat and I’ll figure it out from there.” I quickly climbed into the backseat that was conveniently filled with stuff I could cover myself with. The car reeked of cigarette smell, so I knew I could cloak my scent. The woman laid a few coats and sweaters on top of me, and then quickly got back in the car. “I’ll get you out, don’t worry.” Cameron came a few seconds later and entered the car and pulled out of the driveway. My heart was jumping out of my chest; Cameron was so close I could smell his cologne.

“Everything alright?” Cameron asked, as the car came to a halt.

“Yes, I’m okay,” the woman replied. She seemed kind and caring, like the type of person you could trust. The car sped up, stopped again, and then I would guess pulled into a parking lot. I heard Cameron leave the car again. “Hey, let’s go.” The woman reached behind and pulled the stuff off me. I took a deep breath; we were sitting in front of a convenience store. “My house is down the street, so when we get out run.” I sat up and saw her removing her heels, and then she opened the door. The woman moved the seat and I stepped out quickly. She quietly closed the door, checking the store for Cameron, who was browsing the store. There were people in the parking lot, looking at us like we were crazy. The woman took off towards the street and I followed her, making sure to keep up. She ran fast, but I still managed to keep pace. We ran down a dark street that was illuminated by the occasional street lamp. It felt good to be outside and away from Cameron, even though he still seemed like a threat. We ran for a good three minutes before we arrived at her house. “This is my house, I can take my sister’s car and take you to the border, but that’s as far as I go.” Great, that meant I was going to be stuck wondering the road, which was even more dangerous than being with Cameron. We stepped up her house stairs and she unlocked the door. I made sure to look around for Cameron, I knew that he was going to know we were gone, or well she was gone. He had no idea about me; he figured I was still locked in the room.
