Chapter 10

As the weeks went on, I started to become more comfortable. Raleigh and I had eased off of being around each other all the time, since he began to think it was safe. I trusted him, so we still saw each other, but just not as extreme. Abey didn’t get a little less creepy either, but since I had Chemistry and government with Raleigh, I felt safe. While all this drama was going on, I had managed to make another friend, Damara. I had seen Damara throughout the school and we had said hi to each other. We had one class together and that was math, so it made sense that we became friends.

Schenectady was starting to become home to me and I was starting to enjoy it. I started to think maybe my mother was right when she said that it had more to offer. There were times where I sat and reflected on life, thinking about everything. At times, I did thank my father for messing up and me ending up here. Life was good for everyone, including my mother.

Basketball season had also started up, so Raleigh was only available to drive me to school. After school he would walk me to my locker and my bike, and then go to practice. It felt nice to know somebody was watching over me and making sure I was safe. With all the craziness, I felt like I needed a protector.

“Be safe, biking home,” Raleigh said to me, as I unchained my bike. I nodded.

“Of course I will be,” I smiled at him. When the bike was unhooked, I flipped out the kickstand, went up to Raleigh and hugged him.

“Well, this is unexpected.” He hugged me back, which made me smile. After a few seconds I let go of him. “What was that about?”

“I just want to say thank you, for watching over me.”

“Well, I dragged you into this mess; it’s only my duty to protect you. But I think the fun is over.” I nodded and kicked up the kick stand and hopped on my bike. Raleigh and I waved goodbye and then I was pedaling down the street on my own. The breeze felt nice, whipping past my face, especially going down the hills. For some reason I was really enjoying the bike ride, more than usual. It felt good to be out in nature, by myself. The only part about the ride I hated was this one street that wasn’t a main road, which I only took because it shortened time. It felt weird, like somebody was always watching me, so I always made sure to pedal fast down that street.

About halfway through my shortcut, I began to get an uneasy feeling, like my stomach was queasy. Continuing to pedal, I brushed it off as just something I ate. I figured I would use pepto when I got home. When I turned onto the next street, someone was standing in the way. Reacting quickly, I swerved the bike and crashed in a ditch. I picked myself up and dusted my now ruined outfit. “Hey, you idiot!” I yelled at the man. He turned around, looked at me, and smiled. I stared in shock, it was Cameron.

“Miss me?” he asked, smiling devilishly and walking towards me. I turned around and dashed out of the ditch, running along the street. My mind started racing, what was I going to do? Raleigh was at the school and that was a long dash away. I attempted to pull out my phone when Cameron grabbed me from behind. “I’ve got you, you’re not going anywhere.” I struggled hard against him, trying to break the grip. My breathing was starting to get hard as I struggled and wriggled against him. He was hard to fight, but the more I fought, the more I felt like I was going to get away.

“Raleigh!” I yelled, hoping someone would hear me. This was a residential street after all, somebody had to hear and or see what was going on. Cameron shoved his hand over my mouth. My tongue went out of my mouth and I licked his hand, but the trick didn’t work. He just laughed.
